Posted: Wednesday July 10, 2002 9:46 AM Cycling Weekly profiles the contenders for the Tour de France King of the Mountains' polka-dot jersey.
Spaniard Federico Bahamontes and Belgian Lucien Van Impe have a joint hold on the record for wins in the king of the mountains competition, with six apiece, and it is Virenque’s dearest wish to overtake the two star climbers before he retires.
However, Virenque last wore the polka-dot jersey in Paris in 1999, and he has already complained that he will lack team support in the mountains, so the chances are the French favorite will try to notch up a lot of points before the race hits the Pyrenees, just to make sure.
