  Lucifer (Vertigo)
Lucifer, the comic book, is published by Vertigo Comics, the adult-themed imprint of DC Comics.
Beneath this veneer, however, Lucifer is portrayed as a deadly and Machiavellian character, with no regard for human life or indeed anyone aside from himself: a proud and vindictive fallen angel who has no qualms in using powers which are second only to those of God.
Lucifer's "blissful" retirement is disturbed by a series of associates from his past, and after a certain triggering events he sets out to create a universe in competition to (and against the wishes of) God.

Lucifer: Definition and Links by Encyclopedian.com - All about Lucifer
Lucifer is derived from the latin term lucem ferre, which means "bringer, or bearer, of light." In Roman mythology, Lucifer was a deity equivalent to the Greek Phosporus, and the planet Venus was known by the name Lucifer in Roman astrology before being given its current name.
Lucifer is mentioned in only one place in the Bible (Isaiah 14:12), in translations based on the Latin translation largely made by St. Jerome in the fourth century.
Lucifer is a deity in the Voodoo religions.

Lucifer (DC Comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While Lucifer had previously appeared in various stereotypical guises in earlier DC books, Gaiman's version was unique and premised on English poet and prose writer John Milton's Paradise Lost.
Beneath this veneer, however, Lucifer is a deadly and Machiavellian character, with no regard for human life or indeed anyone or anything but himself: a proud and vindictive fallen angel who has no qualms using powers second only to those of his father, Yahweh.
As the series opened in 1999, Lucifer's "restful" retirement was disturbed by a series of associates from his past, and after various catalytic events, he endeavored to create a universe in competition with (and presumably against the wishes of) his father, Yahweh.

Vertigo (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vertigo was founded in the wake of DC's successful "mature" comics of the late 1980s, beginning with Saga of the Swamp Thing and continuing with Watchmen and The Sandman.
DC founded the Vertigo line in 1993 to attract writers who wanted to publish "mature" comics of this sort, without having to worry about offending parents and young children.
The Vertigo concept emphasized on the supernatural rather than the super-human and can be seen as the "real" world of the DC Universe.

I used that on the final page of Nirvana to caption a shot of Lucifer soaring away into the sky over Beijing, and I think the irony of having that comment apply to him as well as to the narrator, Cai, is pretty clear.

But in time, Lucifer got bored with running what had become known as Hell and realized that in a way he was still serving God by running his realm of punishment: without Hell, Heaven has no meaning.
The events of this battle are detailed in a three part Lucifer mini-series, now available along with the first four issues of the current monthly series in the ("Lucifer: Devil in the Gateway") Trade-Paperback.
The epic feel remains throughout the series as Lucifer travels through many unique realms- from the Japanese afterlife realms to the suburbs of Hell, where dead souls are farmed to create drugs for demons and the demons act like characters from a Jane Austen novel.

Recently she invaded Lucifer's cosmos at the head of a Lilim army, only to end up intervening in a life-or-death struggle between Lucifer and the Basanos, the living Tarot deck which is like a sentient version of Destiny's book.
Lucifer's struggle against God is like every child's struggle against their parents to establish themselves as autonomous beings — only Lucifer carries it a lot further than most of us do, as though he wants to annul all debts and all inheritances.
In fact, when Lucifer was nominated for several Eisners last year, some said that it was through that recognition that Lucifer would be shielded from cancellation worries for another year.

While Vertigo can be accused of strip-mining the SANDMAN name and legacy, LUCIFER does not suffer from the same sort of mediocrity and blandness that has plagued most SANDMAN offshoots, and its origins should not be held against it.
Lucifer is not the architect of the suffering seen in these stories.
Lucifer understands why they must be stopped before they upset the current power structure, and strikes a deal with God.

The writer of DC Comics' (under the mature-readers "Vertigo" imprint) "Lucifer" has recently been signed to an exclusive contract by DC and more reviewers are beginning to discover Carey's writing each month, with some hailing "Lucifer" as one of the industry's most under-rated series.
It is this understanding of Lucifer's intricate personality around which Carey has molded the "Lucifer" series and the scribe explains that Lucifer's quest for freedom is a central aspect of the series.
Lucifer knows that he's a creation of someone else, a contingent being, and he wants to escape from that position - to slip out of the chains of God's foreknowledge and God's plan.

In this case, the book is now following the after-effects of Lucifer's latest plot in Hell, and Carey and Gross have created a version of Hell that is engrossing, horrific and vivid and they're using it as the backdrop for political and personal intrigue.
And all the while that the creators are establishing the setting and characters, they are hinting at the plot, a bit of palace intrigue that ties into Lucifer and perhaps hints at what purpose the lost soul of Christopher Rudd will have in the grand scheme of things.
Rudd's sin and his skills, along with the words "duel" in response to Lucifer, hint that he may be teaching in Hell when all is said and done.

Lucifer is someone who has spent most of the lifespan of the universe so far trying to escape from his place in God's plan and define his own destiny - which, in the Judaeo-Christian scheme of things, is impossible, because everything he can possibly do to rebel has already been foreseen and taken into account.
That was a serendipitous decision because it allowed Lucifer to meet Loki and brought in the new character of Bergelmir, who really seems to work well as a foil for a lot of the female characters.
While "Naglfar" is a more obvious spotlighting of "Lucifer's" supporting cast, the series has always showcased a couple of smaller characters in each story and it seems that they always take on a life of their own.

I don't blame Vertigo for not collecting his work, but it is a bit of a tragedy, as his writing at least on the level of the best of British noir (Derek Raymond, Ted Lewis, etc.) The main problem is that he doesn't always write stories that easily fit into graphic novel form.
Copies of the trade are still available on Amazon and I strongly encourage fans of noir thrillers, atmospheric art, and carefully crafted characters to trawl the back-issue bins and give this a try.

If Elaine had been able to tap Lucifer on the shoulder, pass on just enough power to pull him back from the brink and then fly away into the sunset, it wouldn't have felt real: it would have felt convenient.
It was especially necessary not to blow that at the pivotal point when Lucifer escapes from the Basanos's schemes and turns the situation around.
