  Archdiocese of Cagliari
Cagliari, called by the ancient Caralis, is the principal city and capital of the Island of Sardinia, and an important port on the Gulf of Cagliari.
According to a legend, evidently false, the gospel was preached in Cagliari by Bonifatius, a disciple of Christ.
Other famous bishops of Cagliari were: Ildefonso Lasso Sedeno (1597), commisioned by Clement VIII to reform the convents of Sardinia; Ambrogio Machini, General of the Macedonians, historian of Cagliari and advocate of the canonization of Lucifer.

After the death of Constantius and the accession of Julian the Apostate, Lucifer was released in 362.
Lucifer of Cagliari's chief writings, against Arianism and reconciliation with heresy, include De non conveniendo cum haereticis, De regibus apostaticis, and De S. Athanasio.
His name demonstrates that "Lucifer" (meaning "light-bringer") was not yet merely a synonym of "Satan" in the 4th century.

Lucifer was a staunch ultra-orthodox opponent of Arius, declared a heretic.
Various gnostic "Luciferian" sects that emphasize the dualism of the universe have also been associated with the image of Lucifer, in the root sense of the "bringer of light".
The orthodox view has associated Lucifer with "Satan before the fall", though, as Bishop Lucifer's name attests, Lucifer was not yet associated with "Satan" in the 4th century.

 Lucifer of Cagliari
Lucifer there defended the Bishop of Alexandria with much passion and in very violent language, thus furnishing the adversaries of the great Alexandrian with a pretext for resentment and further violence, and causing a new condemnation of Athanasius.
In the course of this exile Lucifer wrote an extremely virulent pamphlet entitled "Ad Constantium Augustum pro sancto Athanasio libri II", an eloquent defence of Catholic orthodoxy, but in such exaggerated language that it overshot the mark and injured the cause it was meant to serve.
Lucifer boasted of his work, and Constantius, tyrant that he was, refrained from further revenge.

Lucifer was hardly sufficiently educated to appreciate the real question at issue, and the sect which he thus founded did not continue long after his death.
The memory of Lucifer is still cherished in Sardinia; but, although popularly regarded there as a saint, he has never been canonized.
The controversial writings of Lucifer, dating from his exile, are chiefly remarkable for their passionate zeal, and for the boldness and violence of the language addressed to the reigning emperor, whom he did not scruple to call the enemy of God and a second Saul, Ahab and Jeroboam.

I think this gentleman Cagliari [Catholic Bishop who died in 371 CE] might have adopted the name Lucifer to underscore how bad he thought himself to be, or was named that by Latin speaking parents.
Thus, Lucifer was adopted as the name of the devil in his pre-demonic angelic state.
Because Lucifer was taken to be the name of the devil, other tradition arose about him from elsewhere in the Bible where Morning Star, Lucifer in Latin, appears.

 Introduction
After the death of the Arian emperors, when peace and orthodoxy was restored to the Church, some held that bishops who had been tricked into signing heretical statements could never be restored to office, even if their error had been committed in good faith and they now professed the most total orthodoxy.
Lucifer of Cagliari refused communion with anyone who should sully his orthodoxy by communicating with these repentant bishops who had always been orthodox in their hearts, but who had been trapped into making statements that favoured the Semi-Arian doctrine.
The Pope, St Athanasius and St Hilary rejected this harsh view, which is known to history as the schism of the Luciferians.
