  Playbill News: Lucille Lortel Memorial to Be Held May 24 in Greenwich Village
Lucille Lortel, who died April 4 at the age of 98, will be remembered by friends and colleagues at a "celebration" 6 PM May 24 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in Greenwich Village.
Lortel, dubbed "Queen of Off-Broadway" for her early and continuing efforts to produce and promote new or underappreciated playwrights in Manhattan's smaller-venue professional theatres, died April 4 at New York Presbyterian Hospital after a brief illness.
Lortel, the producer and former Broadway actress whose Theatre DeLys in Greenwich Village was ground zero for the term "Off-Broadway," turned 98 Dec. 16, 1998.

Lucille Lortel, whose support of the theatre and new and struggling artists was legendary, has bequeathed $50,000 to Fairfield University for its Theatre program.
Lucille Lortel, the theater producer and patron who was known as the Queen of Off Broadway for her pioneering efforts to bring innovative productions to the American stage, died on April 4, 1999 at age 98.
Lortel began her 70-year career in the theater as an actress, a profession she gave up in 1939 at the request of her wealthy husband, Louis Schweitzer.

Lucille Lortel (December 16, 1900—April 4, 1999) was an American actress and theater producer who is remembered as the namesake of an off-Broadway playhouse and theatrical award.
Born Lucille Wadler in New York City, Lucille Lortel was originally an actress during the 1920s (she once recollected comparing breast sizes with Helen Hayes), who went on to become an off-Broadway theater producer and impresario with the help of a wealthy husband.
She died of natural causes in New York at the age of 98 and is interred at the Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

A memorial tribute to the actress, producer and theater owner Lucille Lortel will be held on Monday at 6 P.M. at the Lucille Lortel Theater, 121 Christopher Street, in Greenwich Village.
Lortel died in April at the age of 98.

In response to the slowing economy — a downturn exacerbated by the events of September 11 — the New York City-based Lucille Lortel Foundation has announced a $1 million grant program for New York City not-for-profit theaters.
To be eligible, the company must have been in operation as a professional, not-for-profit producing organization in New York City for at least three years and have a current annual operating budget of $200,000 to $2.5 million.
"Lucille Lortel gave generously to not-for-profit theaters throughout her life and these grants continue her long-standing philanthropy," said Lortel Foundation president James J. Ross.
