Lucius Appuleius Saturninus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the chief objects of Saturninus 's hatred was Quintus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus, who, when censor, endeavoured to remove Saturninus from the senate on the ground of immorality, but his colleague refused to assent.
Saturninus was elected tribune for the third time for the year beginning December 10, 100, and Glaucia, although at the time praetor and therefore not eligible until after the lapse of two years, was a candidate for the consulship.
Saturninus, defeated in a pitched battle in the Forum (December 10), took refuge with his followers in the Capitol, where, the water supply having been cut off, they were forced to capitulate.

Saturninus mainly had carried that exceptional commission against Caepio and his associates(6) in spite of the most vehement resistance by the government party; and in opposition to the same he had carried the keenly-contested re-election of Marius as consul for 652.
Saturninus was decidedly the most energetic enemy of the senate and the most active and eloquent leader of the popular party since Gaius Gracchus; but he was also violent and unscrupulous beyond any of his predecessors, always ready to descend into the street and to refute his antagonist with blows instead of words.
It was agreed between them that for 654 Marius should become a candidate for a sixth consulship, Saturninus for a second tribunate, Glaucia for the praetorship, in order that, possessed of these offices, they might carry out the intended revolution in the state.

Only when the principate was established -legally within the republic, which was never abolished- did the shift of power to the emperor, no longer a 'temporary' strong man as opposed to the dictator, start to embody the state politically, though never in law, and hence incarnate the maiestas of Rome.
During his consulate in 88 BC, Lucius Cornelius Sulla passed a series of three laws impeding the Tribal Assembly and the Council of the People from considering any law unless it was sent to the assemblies by senatus consultum with a favorable "do pass" recommendation.
These reforms were overturned by the Populares led by Marius and Lucius Cornelius Cinna, restored by Sulla during his dictatorship rei publicae constituendae, and were again overturned after his death.

The Curia Hostilia was the site of the irregular execution of the demagogue Lucius Appuleius Saturninus and his partisans, and burned down in 52 AC when a mob cremated the body of the demagogue Publius Clodius Pulcher inside it.
It was renovated by Julius Caesar during his dictatorate, but his infamous murder in the meeting of the Senate on March 15, 44 AC, did not take place in the Curia Hostilia.

Upto11.net - Wikipedia Article for Apuleius   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Lucius Apuleius (ca 123/5 CE - ca 180 CE), an utterly Romanized Berber who described himself as "half-Numidian half-Gaetulian", is remembered most for his bawdy picaresque Latin novel The Metamorphoses, better known as The Golden Ass.
He was born in Madaurus (now Mdaourouch, Algeria), a Roman colony in Numidia on the border with Gaetulia; this is the same colonia where Saint Augustine later received part of his early education, and, though located well away from the Romanized coast, is today the site of some pristine Roman ruins.
In this guise he hears and sees many unusual things, until Isis returns him to his human form.
