Lucius Lyon (February 26, 1800–September 24, 1851) was a U.S. statesman from the state of Michigan.
On March 28, 1836, Lyon was a witness to the Treaty of Washington of 1836, in which the Ottawa and Chippewa nations of Indians ceded much of the land in the northern portion of the lower peninusla.
Lyon died in Detroit and is interred in Elmwood Cemetery in that city.

Lyon called his half, "Kent," and later, joining with Dexter, Ransom, Sheldon, Daniels, Bostwick and other holders of land north, east and south of the Campau plat, had a "Village of Kent" plat recorded at Kalamazoo February 8, 1836.
Lyon and his associates were influential enough to have the postoffice name changed from "Grand Rapids" to "Kent," on September 1, 1836, when Darius Winsor was appointed postmaster to succeed Leonard Slater, who had lived on the west side.
Bond avenue never has been cut through from Lyon to Pearl, although several attempts have been made to condemn property for that purpose; and when Ottawa avenue eventually was connected with Justice street in 1863, and Ionia avenue with Greenwich street, there was a jog in each of the through avenues.

Michigan's quest for statehood was delayed pending the settlement of boundary disputes with Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, and by the opposition of Southern senators reluctant to admit another non-slave state.

It is believed that this mosaic depicts Lyon's circus, as a dedicatory plaque for it was found near the aqueduct, which would have been necessary to fill the ponds.
