It is surrounded on the eastern side by Barabanki District, on the western side by Unnao District, on the southern side by Raebareli District and on the northern side by Sitapur and Hardoi districts.
Lucknow is also home to the Central Drug Research Institute, the King George's Medical College (now King George's Medical University), Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany, National Botanical Research Institute and Industrial Toxicology Research Centre which is the biggest institute of its kind (in toxicology) in Southeast Asia.
Lucknow, the golden city of the east' is struggling to retain the old world charm that still exists in the old quarters of the city close to the Chowk area.

On the North it is bounded by tehsil mohanlal ganj of district Lucknow and tehsil haider gargh of district Barabanki, on the east by tehsil Mussafir Khana of district Sultanpur and on the south east by pargana Ateha and the Kunda tehsil of district Pratap Gargh.
The district is drainned by the ganga, the sai and their tributeries althrough some of them join the main straem after passing the confines of the district.
This river, which is a teritory of the Gomti, rises in the Hardoi district and for a considerable portion of its course separates the districts of Lucknow and Unnao.

LUCKNOW - Police have revived an old and forgotten methodology, in vogue a hundred years ago, to check crime in the Uttar Pradesh capital.
Residents of Lucknow's crowded Aminabad neighborhood were taken by surprise recently when they heard the beating of drums followed by a loud announcement proclaiming the removal of Mohammad Anees and Mohammad Yunus, two alleged criminals, from the area for a period of six months.
This is to inform one and all that by order of the district collector, Mohammad Anees alias Guddu and Mohammad Yunus alias Teni, sons of Mohammad Yusuf, resident of 100/134 Ganne wali Gali, Kasai-Bara (in Lucknow), have been declared criminals and have been removed from the district of Lucknow for six months,” the announcement said.

The National Human Rights Commission has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to pay a sum of Rs 200,000 to the next of kin of an undertrial who died in custody in Lucknow district.
NHRC sources said on Tuesday that the Commission asked the state government to initiate action for identification of the officials responsible for causing injuries to the victim, Jagdish, and register a case against them.
The report stated that Jagdish was admitted to the district jail, Lucknow on January 17, at about 1700 hours (IST) with a number of bleeding injuries on his person.
