With Lucky she delivers on that promise with mordant wit and an eye for life's absurdities, as she describes what she was like both as a young girl before the rape and how that rape changed but did not sink the woman she later became.
This year my son gave me LUCKY and I was blown away by the author's ability to move me through the horrific experiences she endured and feel somehow I too had triumphed over trauma in the end.
Lucky is a very well written story that conveys the confusion and meaningless of the attack Alice encounters and the effects it has on her, her friends and family, and the community.

Nancy McCabe. -Book Review "Lucky" by Alice Sebold for Literary Potpourri   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
As a memoir, Lucky lacks the brilliant novelistic artifice of The Lovely Bones, a wrenching and riveting yet surprisingly funny, transcendent account of the aftermath of a teenage girl's rape and murder--told from the perspective of the girl, now in heaven.
Telling Lucky's story simply and directly, Sebold achieves comparable harrowing and often funny and inspiring effects as she recounts her brutal rape as a college freshman at Syracuse University and the aftermath--and as in The Lovely Bones, from the first page Sebold reveals her propensity for taking narrative risks.
The memoir begins with the violent attack, plunging readers immediately into the excruciating particulars of the assault, told with such precise scenic details that it is both deeply unsettling to read and impossible to put down.

Books - A Memoir of Michael J. Fox
Safe to say that if it were not for Michael J. Fox’s bold statement before the press in September 1998 and subsequent appearances in Congress and on T.V., Parkinson’s Disease (P.D.) would be not so prominent a subject today or at the center of the controversy surrounding stem cell research.
Lucky Man has much to recommend to that second readership—indeed, perhaps, even to the younger first, since Fox himself came down with the disease at the relatively rare young age of 30.
In one of the most touching parts of the book, MJF extends a wise and compassionate invitation to his curious and no doubt frightened young son to be his scout for the twitching hand — to take charge, squeeze it, control it.

Lucky is a memoir of Sebold’s life and how it was forever altered at the age of eighteen when she was raped in a park near her university campus.
Early into the memoir, the reader becomes acutely aware of the reasons for detailing the rape scene as it is crucial to Sebold’s mission: to speak openly, honestly and intelligently about this still somewhat taboo subject.
As opposed to Sebold’s memoir, Lucky, which begins with a detailed account of a rape, The Lovely Bones is more subtle in the details of the actual moment of the crime, although still gruesome and repugnant.

Lucky Man, by Michael J. Fox, is a celebrity memoir...which means that readers will approach the book with everything they think they know about the actor, and they will include in that supposed knowledge what they've absorbed of his television and film work.
Lucky Man, as a memoir, would be helped by a few things, the first being a table of contents, since Fox tells his story thematically rather than chronologically.
It's saved by not being a memoir of his career or family, but in supporting his thesis: He is a lucky man—not in spite of Parkinson's, but because of it.

It is not Lucky, however, that has shot her into the literary stratosphere, the one that secures the packed publicity schedule of a Hollywood star and suites in the Savoy, such as the one we're sitting in now.
Sebold is frank and unpretentious, and her memoir opens with an extremely graphic and brutal account of the rape itself.

I didn't mean to start reading Lucky, Alice Sebold's memoir of her rape as a college freshman.
The title Lucky comes from Sebold's later realization that a girl had been murdered on the spot where she was raped: as police investigators informed her, she was "lucky" only to have been brutalized.
Although "lucky" isn't the first word most women would associate with the word "rape," Sebold is lucky to have survived with her wits and even a dark sense of humor intact.

When Alice Sebold, author of the best-selling novel, The Lovely Bones (see this database), was completing her freshmen year at Syracuse University, she was assaulted and raped.
The book's title, "Lucky," is explained in the prologue: the police told Sebold that she was lucky to have escaped the fate of another girl who had been murdered and dismembered in the same spot.
In point of fact, Sebold, a virgin before the rape, was in a sense murdered, since life as she had known it would never be the same: "My life was over; my life had just begun" (33).
