Topic: Lucrinus Lacus

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

MARS by Percival Lowell. Chapter V. Oases
The Solis Lacus, or Lake of the Sun, is perhaps the most striking marking on Mars.
Except for fleeting suspicions of gemination, and for possible doublings like the parallelism of the two Hades, the next canal to show double was the Nectar, which was so seen by Mr.
In the Solis Lacus this was evidently a case of mid-clarification.

 Lowell's Mars Chapter 5
In November the relative intensities of the two sets had distinctly changed: the southern canals were much as before, but the northern ones had most perceptibly darkened.
Another instance of the same thing was shown in the case of the canals to the north of the Sinus Titanum when compared with those about the Solis Lacus.
In August the former were but faintly visible; in November they had become evident; and yet, during this interval, little change in conspicuousness had taken place in the canals in the Solis Lacus region.

The coastal-lake theory is substantiated by a passage in Tacitus (Annals, 14.4) in which Nero, on his murderous mission, meets his mother Agrippina on the beach and escorts her to the imperial villa at Bauli, located between the promontory of Misenum and the Lake of Baiae.
The area around Lake Lucrinus is the subject of a similar thorough study by M. Pagano, "Il lago Lucrino: Richerche storiche e archeologiche," Puteoli: Studi di Storia Antica, VII-VIII, 1983-84, 113-226.

Since Sextus Pompeius had command of the sea on the coasts of Italy, Agrippa's first care was to provide a safe harbor for his ships.
He accomplished this by cutting through the strips of land which separated the Lacus Lucrinus from the sea, thus forming an outer harbor, while joining the lake Avernus to the Lucrinus to serve as an inner harbor.
The new harbor-complex was named Portus Julius in Octavian's honour.

In 1538, a new volcano, the Monte Nuovo, suddenly has been formed west of Puzzuoli in the course of a few days, with an altitude of 120m.
This volcano destroyed a number of roman ruins, and part of the site of lake Lucrinus.
Erosion and excavation of the local tuff for construction has also destroyed some archaeological sites.

Agrippa was an obvious choice as composer of such a map, being a navalman who had travelled widely and had an interest in the technical side.
He must have had plans drawn, and may even have devised and used large-scale maps to help him with the conversion of Lake Avemus and the Lacus Lucrinus into naval ports.
The world map, incomplete at Agrippa's death in 12 B.C., was completed by Augustus himself.
