Hutchinson was so dissatisfied with what she had written that she made another essay, which, however, her husband’s descendant Julius Hutchinson suppressed in favour of what he thought the less laboured and more characteristic effort of the two.
Hutchinson was long in expectation of a siege, first by Newcastle and then by prince Rupert; but he held his own both against these dangers and against the perpetual worrying of the parliamentary committee, till times changed after Marston moor.
The form of her book is worthy of its spirit, and contributes to illustrate the supreme force which belonged to religious conceptions and associations as determining conduct in the age of which she was a representative.

Lucy Hutchinson was the wife of Colonel Hutchinson, Parliamentary Governor of Nottingham Castle during the English Civil War (1642 - 1649).
Lucy kept a diary in which she recorded life in the castle.
Lucy wrote that the castle was: "very ruinous and uninhabitable, neither affording room to lodge soldiers or provisions" and that in the Middle Bailey "there had been several towers and many noble rooms, but most of them were down."

The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The 17th Century: Topic 3: Texts and Contexts
Lucy Hutchinson was a well-educated Puritan author and the wife of Colonel John Hutchinson, one of Cromwell's trusted officers, one of the commissioners of the king's trial and a signer of his death warrant, and an active member of the parliaments and councils of state in the commonwealth.
Following the Restoration, John Hutchinson was imprisoned and died while incarcerated, after which Lucy determined to write a Memoir of his life, ostensibly for the sake of their children.
However, what she produced during the years 1664–70 is in fact a brief history of the political and religious conflicts of the first two Stuart reigns, and a much more detailed account of the civil war and commonwealth period, from her perspective as a Puritan who remains a dissenter after the Restoration.

Review: The Restoration: England in the 1660s
As a scholar of John Bunyan and Lucy Hutchinson, Keeble is admirably placed to link the Restoration to the struggles of the Civil War and Protectorate from the point of view of those who felt that 1660 was not a marvellous last chapter, but a catastrophe much in need of reversal.
One of his main informants in a book full of perfectly chosen witness statements is Lucy Hutchinson and she called it a 'change'.
For Keeble, Lucy Hutchinson is one of the most articulate voices of those who would not go along with the Restoration, would insist on building a future out of remembering rather than forgetting.
