Meantone temperament, a system of tuning which averages out pairs of ratios used for the same interval (such as 9:8 and 10:9), thus making it possible to tune keyboard instruments.
To do this, eleven perfect fifths in each octave are flattened by a quarter of a syntonic comma, with the remaining fifth being left very sharp (such an unnacceptably out-of-tune fifth is known as a wolf interval).

To obtain correct tuning, the resonating circuit must be adjusted by means of the trimming condenser on the front panel of the instrument, which is connected in series with the other trimming condenser for spreading its range.

The only universal 'truth', on which all tunings agreed was that halving the length of a string doubles the frequency, and produces a ratio of 2.00000:1 which is known as an octave.
The tuning had to be done by ear, as only the open fifth string would be the same as any other guitar at 110 Hertz.
This apprehension resulted in Lucy guitar Mark VII with nineteen frets to the octave by eliminating the least used of the frets in pairs.

Next to the twelve-equal temperament, which some would not regard as a form of meantone, the best known form of this temperament is quarter comma meantone, which tunes major thirds justly in the ratio of 5:4 and divides them into two whole tones of equal size.
Twelve tone equal temperament is the standard and most usual tuning system used in western music today because it gives the advantage of modulation to any key without dramatically going out of tune, as all keys are equally and slightly out of tune.
Other tuning systems have other advantages and disadvantages and are chosen for these qualities.

Well temperament was a few different compromise tunings (between meantone and equal temperaments) that allowed free modulation throughout all of the keys but still attempted to keep the "character" of the keys which is completely lost with equal temperament.
Key character used to be a tool that composers used in varying "well-tempered" tunings to create different moods by writing in "uncommon" (usually unusuable due to the meantone or pythagorean tunings used in the past) keys that most would now consider as "out of tune".

This actually makes the tuning more familiar (i.e., easier to use) because the stretched octave does act a lot like an octave (i.e., it's possible to double it and to use it as a focal point to resolve to and away from).
