Luddite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, the movement can be seen as part of a rising tide of English working-class discontent in the early 19th century (see, for example, the Pentrich Rising of 1817, which was a general uprising, but led by an unemployed Nottingham stockinger, and probable ex-luddite, Jeremiah Brandreth).
In recent years, the terms Luddism and Luddite or Neo-Luddism and Neo-Luddite have become synonymous with anyone who opposes the advance of technology due to the cultural changes that are associated with it.

That machinery alone was not the primary cause of Luddite anger is evident in the cessation of Luddism.
Despite its brief run, Luddism ought to be understood as E. Thompson and J. and Barbara Hammond have argued, as an important step in the formation of a class consciousness and the development of labor unions in Britain.
Both the appropriation of the term Luddism and the use of the term as an epithet are erroneous; to use the term other than in its historical context is to display ignorance of the particularity of historical conditions.

The primary aspect of Luddism is the belief that technological advancement is neither inevitable nor uncontrollable.
Luddism suggests that a balanced, inclusive analysis of technologies be introduced to our society, in place of the ideology that is now dominant.
I will not consider objections to Luddism that argue that it is immoral to destroy technologies, as I believe that I have made it clear that the Luddism I am suggesting is not a violent ideology and does not condone nor encourage destructive behavior.

Luddism has a long history and the term, ‘Luddite,’ has been adapted to those today who are against future and modern technology.
Luddism spread to neighboring areas and revolts were against many new technologies.
The idea of Luddism will be present as long as technology is evolving; and with the continuance of higher technology being developed, perhaps people will become more aware for themselves the seriousness of the issues proposed by Luddites.

Cultural Aspects of Foods, Food Resource, Oregon State University
I shall call it Culinary Luddism, after the Luddites, the English hand workers who in the nineteenth century smashed the machinery that was destroying their traditional way of life.
When Culinary Luddism plays down how much your class constrained what you ate in the past, it can all too easily let us forget how modern food allows people more choices, not just of food but of what they do with their lives.
To conclude, Culinary Luddism combines a nostalgia for a past that never was with a hankering for a system of food product that, not by accident but by its very nature, was labor intensive, socially repressive, and morally exploitative.

A: I suppose we should expect to find Luddism occurring most ardently in those places which, like England in the early 19th century, are feeling the first disrupting impacts of an Industrial Revolution.
A: There must there be a distinction, mustn't there, between an action like a computer virus that is meant as a prank, a hackeristic ego trip, and one with some more political purpose, directed at a larger system or corporation or the culture it thrives in.
I do not have any confidence that the human species will survive for more than another 25 years, and if some remnants do, the best I can do is pray that they will have learned the lessons of industrial technology and not commit the same crimes again.

They rose up with such ferocity not against all technology, as they are sometimes accused of, but against technologies that they saw would crush their livelihoods, overturn the traditional modes of work and employment, and erase the customary bonds of household, community and marketplace that had endured for centuries.
Northern Luddism exploded first in Yorkshire in 1812, with a factory burned in January, three workshops attacked and their machines broken in February, a dozen more workshops and two factories attacked in March with hammers, torches, pistols and muskets.
Lancashire followed with a factory attack and the burning of a warehouse in February, another factory attack in March, and then in April no fewer than ten factories were set on, their machinery smashed, and two of them were burned to the ground, the most violent actions in the Luddites' whole campaign.

Nevertheless, selective Luddism is not the result of any sophisticated calculus of risks, as is evident at your neighborhood McDonald's.
This points to yet another possible explanatory principle of selective Luddism, which is that people seem to fear a low probability of immediate harm much more than a high probability of harm some day in the hazy and far-off future.

In Thomis's view, Luddism was an ever-changing phenomenon, and the fact that it was an evolving movement rather than a clearly defined one has allowed scholars to read much into them.

Acknowledging that Luddites and Luddite violence has been met with practically universal disapproval, the authors find in Luddism an inspirational historical model for a resistance of capitalism and technology: "Luddism represented an attitude of resistance, of refusal by working people to be defined and dominated by capital, that was appropriate to the nineteenth century" (39).
Many pages are spent detailing the widespread resistance to Luddism in Britain, citing examples from Harold Wilson of the Labor Party during the 1960s declaring "there is no room for Luddites in the Socialist Party" (42) to Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s calling all those who stood in the way of neo-liberalism "Luddites".
