Duvernay's chief title to fame is the foundation of the Society of St. John the Baptist (1834).
The union of the two Canadas having been voted by the British Parliament and the principle of representative government adopted, peace was restored and political exiles were allowed to return.
Duvernay began again the publication of "La Minerve", in which he extolled the introduction of responsible government, and criticized the Act of Union destined, by its authors, to absorb Lower Canada.

Duvernay had been warned that his arrest was imminent and had fled by the time the bailiffs made their appearance at the printing house of La Minerve.
Duvernay was appointed coordinating commissioner, a key post which put the responsibility for current matters in his hands and allowed him to give the society its guidelines and objectives.
Duvernay shared Papineau’s admiration for the “republican elective institutions” of the United States but he was also much more conciliatory and no longer approved of the “radicalism” of the Patriote party’s former leader.

 The Patriotes Rebellion. Quebec 1837-1839
The Patriots, led by Louis-Joseph Papineau, opposed the British colonialists and had been calling for an American-style democracy.
Two Patriot journalists, the Irishman Daniel Tracey and French-Canadian Ludger Duvernay had even been arrested for writing in the local press articles that said that “it is certain that before long all of America must be republican.”
The Patriots, after several years of agitation for an elective Legislative Assembly and increased local powers, in 1834 addressed London directly with their 92 Resolutions, the key points of which seem fairly modest: the elected Assembly and control of the budget.

In any case that was the name he chose, and the St-Jean-Baptiste Association (St-Jean-Baptiste Society from 1914 on) of Montreal took the maple leaf and the beaver as its emblems.
