 Ludolf Backhuysen - Definition, explanation
Ludolf Backhuysen (or Bakhuisen) (1631-November 17, 1708), Dutch painter, was born at Emden, in Hanover.
He was brought up as a merchant at Amsterdam, but early discovered so strong a genius for painting that he relinquished business and devoted himself to art.
His compositions, which are very numerous, are nearly all variations of one subject, and in a style peculiarly his own, marked by intense realism or faithful imitation of nature.

Ludolf Backhuysen focuses on three themes: his stylistic development, the unique quality of his paintings, and the meaning of the marine genre.
Based on the author’s literature search, the book shows that a number of paintings formerly thought to be by Backhuysen should actually be attributed to his contemporaries.
Ludolf Backhuysen is the first, very thorough (and thus unique) monograph about this great master of 17th-century seascapes.

Dr Gerlinde de Beer has a comment on the relationship between Backhuysen and van de Velde which is quoted here.
It makes greater sense to draw a line from Dubbels or Backhuysen to Turner, via Monamy, who introduces those elements which are characteristically English --- the colouring and close attention to weather and sunlight.
While on the topic of colouring it is amusing to note de Beer's comment on one of Archibald's captions to a painting incorrectly ascribed to Backhuysen (plate 117, Dictionary of Sea Painters, 1980): "A painting from the artist's early 'fl' period".

In 1996 the German Maritime Museum acquired a large seascape of 1682 by the German-born painter Ludolf Backhuysen.
As mentioned above, the Backhuysen painting is also relevant from a sociohistorical point of view: The Netherlands of the seventeenth century were a sparsely populated region, highly dependent on all types of labour — particularly seamen and soldiers — from abroad to aid it in its expansion efforts and whaling industry.
Hundreds of thousands came from the neighbouring German Reich, which was in a state of total ruin due to the Thirty Years' War and its consequences, to seek their fortunes at sea and in foreign parts.

Gerlinde de Beer’s monograph on the great Dutch marine painter Ludolf Bakhuizen is a welcome addition to the strikingly limited scholarship on this artist.
Surprising, too, is De Beer’s use, without explanation, of the spelling “Backhuysen” when the artist himself tended from the late 1680s to favor the spelling “Bakhuizen.”This is the spelling used in the notices of his death and the spelling adopted by the Amsterdam exhibition of 1985.
These are, of course, minor points in a book that makes an overview of the work of a major artist available for the first time.

Ships Running Aground in a Storm by BACKHUYSEN, Ludolf
Backhuysen executed this painting (his largest surviving one) as if he were observing the disaster in the midst of the roiling seas, thus engaging beholders in the unfolding tragedy, encouraging them to empathize with the ships and their crews and to contemplate the powers of God, beyond full comprehension.
But even as such paintings acknowledge the fragility of Dutch seaborne success, their distant shafts of sunlight usually hold out hope for reversals of misfortune.
Collectors occasionally hung a tempest painting opposite a sunny shipping scene, implying that the power of God and nature, whether terrifying or benevolent, is always magnificent.

In a work now on view in Bremerhaven, the Dutch seascape painter Ludolf Backhuysen (Emden 1630 — Amsterdam 1708) depicted a shipment scene likely to have taken place in the Dutch roadstead of Texel.
The general composition scheme differs from Backhuysen's typically dramatic and lively Baroque style, exhibiting a harmony more characteristic of classical tendencies.
Following the assumption of power by the family of Orange in 1672, the courtly figural type gradually replaced the bourgeois one in the works of Backhuysen.
