Ludwig Anzengruber -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
LudwigAnzengruber (November 19, 1839 - December 10, 1889) was an (A mountainous republic in central Europe; under the Habsburgs (1278-1918) Austria maintained control of the Holy Roman Empire and was a leader in European politics until the 19th century) Austrian writer and poet.
He was born and died in (The capital and largest city of Austria; located on the Danube in northeastern Austria; was the home of Beethoven and Brahms and Haydn and Mozart and Schubert and Strauss) Vienna.
Between 1860 and 1868, Anzengruber acted in the theatre.
USTRIAN dramatist and novelist LudwigAnzengruber was born at Vienna on the 29th of November 1839.
Anzengruber was exceedingly fertile in ideas, and wrote a great many plays.
Anzengruber also published a novel of considerable merit, Der Schandfleck (1876; remodelled 1884); and various short stories and tales of village life collected under the title Wolken und Sunn'schein (1888).
The 19th-century German novelist, playwright, and critic Otto Ludwig is best known for his realistic stories, which contributed to the development of the German short narrative form known as the novelle.
Historian and politician Ludwig Quidde was one of the most prominent German pacifists of the 20th century.
From 1914 to 1929 he served as chairman of the German Peace Society and criticized his country's military policies both during and after World War I. He was the cowinner (with French educator Ferdinand Buisson) of the Nobel prize for peace in 1927.
This was the form employed in the Storm and Stress drama, and therefore in the prison scene of _Faust_, as also in Schiller's youthful dramas, and again we find it adopted by Hebbel and the Young Germans, and by the naturalistic school under the leadership of Ibsen.
A new responsibility was placed upon the shoulders of the German poet, which rested heavily on men like Otto Ludwig, and on account of which writers like Hebbel or Richard Wagner thought themselves justified in claiming the royal privileges of the favorites of the gods.
This volume is devoted, in the main, to three of the most prominent Austrian dramatists and novelists: Anzengruber, Rosegger, and Schonherr, writers connected with each other through their intimate knowledge and loving portrayal of popular life.
That these writers, as a group, show a close affinity to such painters as Defregger, Leibl, and Thoma, some of whose works are here reproduced for illustration seems obvious.
Schonherr came first to be unknown to the public at large by this play, which is rightly considered his masterpiece, although the critical reader will not fail to observe that Mother Earth surpassed it in the clear outlines of its characters and in the purity of its style.
