When Landgrave Ludwig X of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1806 joined the Confederation of the Rhine, Hesse-Darmstadt obtained the status of a Grand Duchy and Ludwig became the first Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt and by Rhine (Ludwig I).
The bronze statue was cast by the famous Ludwig Michael von Schwanthaler from Munich.
Ludwig IV was born in 1837 and was Grand Duke from 1877 until 1892.

It was designed by sculptor Ludwig Michael von Schwanthaler in 1844 and was created in cast-iron by Ferdinand von Miller of the renowned foundry of J.B. Stiglmair.
The statue stands 18.52 meters high (nearly 61 feet) and appears to guard the front of the Ruhmeshalle (Hall of Fame).
It is a Greco-Roman style building that was erected under King Ludwig I from 1843 to '53 and serves as a pantheon for celebrated Bavarians.

All this was principally brought about by the taste of the present king, Ludwig I., who began twenty or thirty years ago, when he was crown-prince, to collect the best German artists around him and form plans for the execution of his grand design.
