 bauhaus-archiv museum of design - bauhaus 1919 - 1933 - architecture - mies van der rohe
The appointment of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe as director of the Bauhaus was programmatic: It was expected of him to reconcile Bauhaus patrons with the institution, to continue with the reforms introduced by Meyer, and, with the help of his outstanding artistic personality, to present a new Bauhaus image, particularly in architecture.
Mies avoided organizing the life of the inhabitants of his houses right until the last detail so as to minimize the inside surface of the apartments; he created incomparably qualitative spaces in which spatial freedom could be experienced.
Mies' architecture was very attractive to students who had concluded their technical education in building and wished to further their aesthetic studies with him.

While the success of their work can be measured by the praise it has received over the years--one observer called it "the most spatially successful and socially significant statement in urban renewal"--perhaps a better recommendation comes in the low turnover and high occupancy rates the project continues to enjoy thirty years after its construction.
The Mies van der Rohe Residential District is located just east of Chrysler Freeway (Interstate 375) and is roughly bounded by Rivard St.,Lafayette Ave., Orleans St., and Antietam St. The buildings within the district are private and not open to the public.

"The site [Mies van der Rohe] selected [for the German Pavilion in Barcelona] allowed for the transverse passage of visitors from a terrace-like avenue bordering the exhibition palaces to the other attractions.
According to Mies, the furniture designed and fabricated especially for the pavilion, the Barcelona chairs and stools, went unused during the opening ceremony.
Technically Mies was unable to erect the pavilion as a pure 'Dom-ino' structure; the eight cruciform columns alone could not support the roof and a number of extra columns had to be lodged in the double-skinned marble screens to help carry the load.
