Ludwig Quidde (March 23, 1858 March 4, 1941) was a German pacifist who is mainly remembered today for his acerbic criticism of German Emperor Wilhelm II.
Quidde's long career spanned four different eras of German history: that of Bismarck (up to 1890); the Hohenzollern Empire under Wilhelm II (1888 - 1918); the Weimar Republic (1918–1933); and, finally, Nazi Germany.

 Quidde, Ludwig
Ludwig Quidde (March 23, 1858 - March 4, 1941), the oldest son of a wealthy merchant, grew up in the republican atmosphere of the Hanseatic city of Bremen, enjoying an unusually liberal education at its humanistic gymnasium, «an education in freedom to freedom».
Quidde, however, did not follow a career as a professional historian, perhaps because he had a substantial private fortune, but he always maintained a lively interest in history, especially constitutional history, even after his attention had turned from the academic to the political.
Although Quidde's private fortune had been wiped out by the inflation, he was able to live fairly well with the help of friends and with a subvention from the Nobel Peace Prize Committee for his projected book, German Pacifism during the World War, which was never finished.

Quidde thought a campaign would be likely to bring harm to Ossietzky, and he felt that were he not in the concentration camp, Ossietzky would never be nominated for his record in the organized peace movement, but he went along haltingly.
Quidde was sure that it could only bring harm to Ossietzky when it became known that a campaign for his prize proceeded from "German emigrés, socialists, communists, pacifists, and Jews." Quidde said he was much put out that his request to keep his 1935 nomination confidential had not been honored.
Quidde had said the same thing when in 1935 he nominated Kuester along with Ossietzky.
