Spohr was born in Braunschweig in the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg and showed talent for the violin from his early childhood.

 Ludwig Spohr - LoveToKnow 1911
'LUDWIG SPOHR (1784-1859), German composer and violinist, was born at Brunswick on the 25th of April 1784.
Spohr had a triumphant success both as composer and as virtuoso; and he on his side was delighted with the Philharmonic orchestra.
Spohr's resources at Cassel enabled him to produce his new works on a grander scale and with more perfect detail than he could have attained in a less well-endowed post; and he never failed to use these privileges to the advantage of other meritorious composers, though as a critic he was very difficult to please.

Spohr was born in the North German city of Braunschweig (Brunswick) on 5 April 1784 and as a boy showed talent for the violin.
Spohr's importance for his contemporaries and what captured them and enraptured them was his richness of harmony and command of modulation and chromaticism.

North-German born Louis (Ludwig) Spohr won a substantial reputation during the first half of the nineteenth century as a violin virtuoso, conductor, author, teacher and the prolific composer of over one hundred works.
Spohr was also fond of experimental compositions using often original and novel formats and instrumental combinations in works that included three-single movement integrated Violin concertos (or Concertinos as he called them), a Concerto for string quartet and orchestra, a Symphony for two orchestras, two Double violin concertos and two Double quartets.
Spohr’s String Sextet Op.140 is widely regarded as one of the most bountiful and successful compositions of its type and is given a sterling performance by Ensemble Villa Musica.

Bio: Although virtually unknown to general audiences, the musical legacy of German composer, conductor and violinist Ludwig Spohr (known to English audiences of the day as Louis Spohr) is far-reaching indeed.

Throughout his life Spohr was famous for being as generous and warm a person as he was profound a musician.

Spohr was born in Brunswick-Lüneburg and showed talent for the violin from his early childhood.
Spohr lated worked as conductor at Theater an der Wien, Vienna (1813-1815), where he became friendly with Ludwig van Beethoven, and as opera director at Frankfurt (1817-1819) where he was able to stage his own operas, the first of which, Faust, had been rejected in Vienna.
Though obscure today, Spohr's best operas Faust (1813), Zemire und Azor (1819) and Jessonda (1823) remained in the popular repertoire through the 19th century and well into the 20th when Jessonda was banned by Nazis because it depicted a European hero in love with an Indian princess.

 Spohr 8
Louis (or Ludwig) Spohr was an extremely accomplished violinist and composer, in his time more famous in some circles than the other Ludwig—Beethoven.
Spohr towered over other men and was said to have the hands of an athlete.
Spohr’s goal of making the violin sing is obvious from the very first entry of the soloist, which is marked “Recitative.” The operatic nature of the violin’s melody draws attention to the proximity of the violin’s voice to that of a prima donna soprano.

These Schubert and Spohr recordings, dating from the group's heyday in 1958 and 1959, helped spread the influential Viennese style worldwide.
Their Schubert depicts the composer's Vienna on a cloudless, balmy summer's noon; it exudes bucolic charm sweetened by a bigger helping of schlag than the piece needs.
The Vienna Octet shines in the Spohr, though.

Louis Spohr is surely one of the most unfairly neglected composers of the early 19th century.
An influential and respected figure in his time, Spohr was an all-around musician: conductor, composer and violin virtuoso.
Poised between Classicism and Romanticism, Spohr seems at one moment to echo Mozart, at another to prefigure Brahms, and often to resemble a slightly more earnest Mendelssohn.
