Ludwigshafen is the birthplace of the world-famous German rock-climber Wolfgang Güllich.
The first settlement in the area of Modern Ludwigshafen was a fortress ("Die Rheinschanze") built by Kurfürst Friedrich IV on the other side of the Rhine River to protect the City of Mannheim.
The year 1843 was the birth of Ludwigshafen, when Lichtenberger sold this property to Bavaria (Bayern), and the military title of the fortress was removed.
