German Literature (Catholic Encyclopedia) - BibleWiki
While not possessing the literary merit of the "Heliand," it is of the greatest importance because it definitely introduces into German poetry the principle of rhyme, already familiar from the Latin church hymns.
Rhyme was also used by the unknown author of the "Ludwigslied" to celebrate the victory of Louis III over the Northmen at Saucourt (881).
This is the only song of the period not purely religious in character, though its author was probably a cleric.

The most famous work in OHG is the Hildebrandslied, a short piece of Germanic alliterative heroic verse which is the sole survivor of what must have been a vast oral tradition.
Other important works are the Evangelienbuch (Gospel harmony) of Ottfried von Weissenburg, the short but splendid Ludwigslied, and in the northern dialect of Old Saxon, a life of Christ in the style of a heroic epic known as the Heliand.
The Old High German period is reckoned to run until about the mid-11th century, though the boundary to Early Middle High German (second half of the 11th century) is not clear-cut.

Christian Heroism and the West Saxon Achievement: The Old English Poetic Evidence
John Bostock bluntly assesses the Ludwigslied as "a glorification of the Church Militant, and of the king, its servant" (241).
The historical events are portrayed as entirely in God’s hands, from the coming of the heathens as a scourge on the Frankish people because of their sins, to Christ’s calling Louis to battle to help the repentant people, to the Frankish victory through the divinely inspired valor of Louis.
The Ludwigslied, commemorating the 881 Battle of Saucourt, appears in a manuscript dated to about the year 900 (Wolf 75); the Chronicle entries for Brunanburh (s.a.

 Old High German Literature
It has already been pointed out that there is little in the Old High German period which can be classified as literature.
In this anthology the period is represented by the Hildebrandslied, passages from two Gospel harmonies, Heliand and the Evangelienbuch of Otfried von Weißenburg, and the Ludwigslied.
It is hardly necessary to state that throughout the period in which these works were being written there was also a flourishing Latin literature of much greater sophistication.

The field grew wet with men's blood from when in the morning-tide that glorious star, the sun, glided aloft and over earth's plains, the bright candle of God the everlasting Lord, to when that noble creation sank to rest[9].
There are certain similarities between The Battle of Brunanburh and the Old High German Ludwigslied, a short poem celebrating in clearly martial Christian terms (and within one year of the event) the 881 victory won by the West Frankish King Louis III over the Vikings at the Battle of Saucourt [10].
It is interesting that specific notice is taken in the first lines of the presence of Athelstan's half-brother and successor Edmund I (r.
