Much grander and on an island in the middle of the city, it is surrounded by gardens, a castle park and the opera house and a museum.
Lunch is served in the dining room and we tour the grounds and park that was first planned in the 16th century, but subsequently laid out in the 19th century to resemble the gardens at Versailles.

Outraged by what they found, the ranking Allied commanders in the area forced civilians from the nearby towns of Schwerin, Hagenow, and Ludwigslust to view the concentration camp and then bury the bodies of prisoners in their towns.
Approximately 200 bodies were buried in Ludwigslust on the grounds of the palace of the Archduke of Mecklenburg.
