Luena is the founding co-chair and a Board member of the East Africa Grantmakers Association (EAAG), a trustee of the East Africa Centre for Philanthropy (UFADHILI), and founding Secretary-General (1988-95) of the Tanzania Association of NGOs.
Luena is very engaged in promoting social justice and philanthropy at both local and international levels.

In Luena, says von Seth, they have succeeded in starting a church network with representatives of eleven different churches, who cooperate closely on AIDS education as well as in reconciliation work.

LUENA, Angola, Dec 14 (UNHCR) – As the onset of rain forces the UN refugee agency to wind down its second season of assisted repatriation to Angola, earlier returnees have shared their experiences with UNHCR staff, telling them that coming home is only the beginning of the long and sometimes arduous process of reintegration.
Together with their seven children, they returned to Luena in eastern Angola, on their own and started rebuilding their lives without assistance.

There was fighting many years ago between Cuban and South African forces and over much of the last decade between the government and forces of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).
