Lufia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, released in Japan for the Super Famicom under the name Estoplis Denki II, is a prequel to Lufia and The Fortress of Doom that takes place a hundred years before the events of the first game occured, and ends the same way the first game began.
It was released in Europe as simply "Lufia: Rise of the Sinistrals" because Lufia and the Fortress of Doom was not released in Europe.
Lufia: The Ruins of Lore, released in Japan in 2002 as Estpolis Gaiden: Chinmoku no Iseki and later in America in 2003, is a gaiden or "sidestory" game that deviates from the normal lore of the series.

RPGFan Reviews - Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals was one of the last RPGs released for the Super NES.
Lufia 2 is actually a prequel to the first Lufia game; the story of Lufia 2 takes place 100 years before the first game.
Lufia 2 was designed so that individual fights are hard, but survival in dungeons is easy because healing items and abilities, as well as save points and healing stations, are plentiful.

Lufia 2 succeeds in some ways, but it doesn't excel beyond a certain level and ends up repeating much of what was already done in Lufia 1.
One excuse I often hear for Lufia 2's lack of energy is that all the challenge is in the Ancient Cave.
Lufia 2 even has some Zelda-style items, such as a hookshot, bow and arrow, and hammer, but their usage is far more limited here.

Well, not all of Lufia 2's ending is given away in the beginning of Lufia 1, there's still plenty of stuff to find out there.

RPGFan Reviews - Lufia: The Legend Returns
As a result, news of the impending release of a third Lufia game, this time for the Game Boy Color portable console, was received with great anticipation in the RPG-playing community.
Unfortunately, the series' first hand-held installment fails to warrant its pre-release attention; in spite of its strong visuals, a complex and creative game system, and a solid soundtrack, Lufia: The Legend Returns is mired in mediocrity by its shallow storyline and dull, repetitive play.
Although Lufia: The Legend Returns will likely disappoint fans of the first two games in the series, it's a solid release for the Game Boy Color in a genre that carries few titles on that console.

 Geek-Asylum.com Lufia 2 Review
The game play of Lufia 2 is one of the few times in RPG history when some truly innovative features were installed to a traditional RPG series and it did not just take away from enjoyment of the series.
Most importantly, unlike Pokemon (or disk monsters of Lufia 4), each evolution was radically different from the previous form (except for the neutral capsule monster or the early forms of the fire one).
In Lufia 4, you have to switch out a party member to use the monster of your choice, but in Lufia 2, there was a special position just for it.

A decent attempt at a Lufia sequel that's too archaic to love.
That leads us to a Lufia for GBA that's made by a new team that lacks the imagination, drive, or creativity of the series' originators, and shamelessly apes it and other games without a thought to making necessary improvements to bring the series in to the 21st century.
The battles in general, honestly, are ten years behind the times; when Lufia II debuted its one sore spot -- in a game that was otherwise of immensely high quality -- was the tedium of its battle system.

Lufia: The Ruins of Lore is quite difficult, so you'll often need to go out of your way to just keep fighting in order to level up--a process made especially cumbersome because of the combat system's pace.
Additionally, Lufia: The Ruins of Lore has a simple but fairly entertaining job system--your characters can become fighters, mages, alchemists, and more, which doesn't affect their appearance but does affect their core stats and determines which new abilities they'll gain as they earn experience points.
