The lug nuts on the Hummer are compressed to produce a resistance thread.
Lug nuts should be snug but not difficult to hand turn, but they do "stretch" after being torqued a few times which can make them very tough to get on and off (especially with a manual wrench...in the field), and it's a good idea to replace them at regular intervals.

 McGard lifetime chrome lug nuts
What was amazing was that the chrome McGard lug nuts which were previously on the truck had been installed since 1989 and they still looked as good when we removed them as they did when the lug nuts were installed.
We have to admit, that the acorn style chrome lug nuts are much easier to work with than the old mag style lug nuts.
The McGard wheel locks are a special type of lug nut that is completely smooth on the outside so a regular wrench cannot be used to remove the wheel locks.

Use anti-seize on the studs especially is you have to use a different lug nut with the aftermarket wheel.
When I loosened the lug nut it had seized with the threads of the stud and ripped apart the threads.
The interface between the lug nut and the wheel is the friction that will prevent the lugs from backing off.

I realize that you cannot use the stock lugs because the contact point on the wheel would be to small as the circuit 8's have a tapered hole for the lugs rather than flat.
I was always worried about my lugs comming loose because i couldn't tighten them down too hard or the key would get wedged sooo bad that I couldn't take it out w/o jerking it in the loosen direction which would loosen the nut before the key broke free..
Yeah, there is no "play" between my lug nuts and the Gorilla key, so I'm assuming they fixed the problem by making the grooves on the lug nuts deeper, or something.

 THE H.A.M.B. - Locking Lug Nuts...
What I've done before is take a 7/8 jamb nut and set it on the end of the lock and wire weld through the hole.
A jamb nut isn't as tall as a regular nut so it's easier to get to the lug nut for a good weld.
The wheel face is too deep, so if you put the vise grips onto the nut, it is at about a 70* angle from the nut, so there is no way to even get any leverage on it with the vise grips.

Heat the lug nuts red hot and let them cool before you take them off with a six point impact socket.
Unfortunately, the O.D. of the socket will not allow the socket to fit over the lug nut due to the clearance between the lug nuts and the hub.
I found that a couple had rusted to the rim enough that a bit of the nut was gone.

 NASIOC - lug nuts for p1's.
It is not absolutely necessary, but is recommended to get some lug nuts with greater seating area than the stock ones.
Also, with the stock lugs, there's a slight possibility that the 6 edges of the lugs may mark the wheels.
The factory lug nuts didnt seat properly so I called OZ and they said the seller should have included a set of lug nuts....but guess what they didnt.

For 1971 all lug nuts were RH thread.
I retrieved the wheel from a ditch, put it back on using one lug nut from each of the other 3 wheels, and made it home that way.
One reason for the lug bolts instead of lug studs on the rear, is that you have about two inches less of obstruction to changing a rear tire, (although that not so important on your car with the full wheel opening) if you had studs it would be a tighter fit.

The best option is to loosen the nut then re-torque it to spec.
Second best would be to try tightening in place and see where the nut breaks free, but if you find its too tight, you'll need to back it off and torque up to spec.
and the most common cause is over tightening of the lug nuts...

 James & Katy Moffitt: Lug nuts anyone?
Katy tells me that they are refusing to work on my car because lug nuts are missing off of the tires.
Sure enough, here comes the mechanic who advises me that ONE lug nut is missing off of the back right rear tire and therefore it is deemed an unsafe vehicle that they can not touch.
I asked them to find me a manager who came and insisted that their policy states that if you are missing one lug nut your vehicle is deemed unsafe and therefore we wont work on it.

 Lug Nuts & WD40
Last night I switched my regular wheels with my winter wheels and in the process sprayed a bit of WD40 on the lug nuts (these are the male lug nuts used on bimmers)...
If you apply a bit of WD40 to these lugs to clean them when they are really rusty and tough to screw on, will that in and of itself cause properly torqued lug nuts to come loose?
The other possibility is I lowered that particlar jacked wheel last night and in my rish to get finished moved on to the next wheel but forgetting to final tighten and torque the left rear.
