		THE main cause for the huge waves that lashed Misamis Oriental’s coastal towns last week was a "storm surge" but its effects were further magnified by a confluence of weather conditions which occurred almost simultaneously across the country’s area of responsibility.
		Teodoro Sabuga-a, executive officer of the Misamis Oriental provincial disaster coordinating committee, said latest reports submitted by the 11 towns affected by the storm surge showed a total of 1,939 families were affected by the huge waves totaling 8,610 individuals.
		The two worst cases recorded in Misamis Oriental by the team were in the Poblacion of Libertad where the "run-up" or water pushed inland by the huge waves reached 100-200 meters, and in Sitio Sigaoc in Lagonglong where the run up accumulated up to 200-300 meters inland over the three-day storm surge.

	News and events - Petron, Holcim enter into energy-from-waste accord
		The waste material may be used as alternative fuel in cement production, a manufacturing process which requires very high temperatures.
		Under the agreement between the two companies, Petron will facilitate channeling of waste oil from its customers to Holcim’s cement plants at Lugait, Misamis Oriental and Norzagaray, Bulacan, where it will be used as a source of alternative fuel in the production of cement.
		Theses plants can process about 48,000 to 60,000 liters/day of liquid waste, and have been granted environmental compliance certificates by the department of Environment and Natural Resources.
