There isn't a very convenient dinghy landing spot at the heart of town and the anchorage can be exposed to and become rolly because of the predominant southeast winds which blow through the channel.
Luganville was the base for US military during WWII, with hundreds of thousands of troops passing through the base during the war.
Just before the US was going to pull out of Luganville, the French lowered their offer to pennies on the dollar thinking the US would have no option but to accept as it was not cost-effective to ship all of the equipment back to the US.

Luganville is the site of the wreck of the SS President Coolidge which sank in the harbor after hitting two US mines.
During our week in Luganville, we had a chance to spend more time with our new friends G.B. and Sarah from the sailboat Djarrka and Ken and Kathy from Felicity.
We also met two English medical students, Richard and Helen, who were working for a couple months at the local hospital and two honeymoon couples, Wayne and Kelley from Australia who were staying at the local resort, and Terry and Eleanor who were diving with us.

At that speed and in the deteriorating sea conditions, we were going to be 60 miles southwest of Luganville in the morning with two tired sailors trying to get back, so we hove to with the main reefed down to miniscule size.
The books say Luganville is a terrible anchorage in these conditions, and so we went back the way we came, up to the southwestern end of Santo to try Lisburne Anchorage noted on the charts that might afford some shelter and give us some rest.

Luganville is not the kind of town I’d advise you to go on a family holiday to.
In 1942 she was commissioned by the US Army to carry troops and freight, and at the time of her sinking she was carrying 5150 troops and 290 crew.
It was a great photo opportunity – with the highlight being Deb demonstrating the use of a male bedpan, resulting in complete hysteria from Dylan, G and me, and she wonders why we were all low on air at the end!!

This is a country town in many ways but there are good accommodations, reasonably priced, mainly Chinese restaurants, and interesting general stores, banks and government service buildings.
There is a Melanesian-style bungalow for visitors to stay in near famous "Champagne Beach" in the north, and year-round one to 10 day guided history and nature walks are available.

Being there during the time of their Independence may have hurt the attendance at our evening Bible studies, because there were activities in the park for everyone each night But, we did make several very good contacts and some people are very close to obeying the gospel.

One of the most regularly seen species (along with the next species), first seen on Iririki and in Luganville and then in virtually all habitats flying to within ten centimetres of the ground.
After struggling to see this species on Mt. Lewis in far north Queensland, it was very strange to see two flocks (totalling about 25 birds and including juveniles) of the subspecies cyanofrons feeding on Mele Golf Course on the fairways and in Casuarina trees.
By far the commonest finch on Santo (contra Doughty et al.) this introduced species was seen in Luganville and in roadside vegetation as far north as Loru.

Port Vila's population, estimated at 28,000, has doubled over the past 13 years, and a similar increase is taking place in Luganville.

There is a ferry service across to Luganville at 250 vatu per person.
The numerous stores along Luganville's main street all look basically the same from the storefronts, but every one sells different items and the curious shopper will be likely to find interesting items.
