Over time, however, Lughnassa and later, Imbolc, began to gain more importance and were celebrated more often.
Lughnassa was the midsummer festival, when the Celts celebrated the beginning of the harvest season and the peak of summer.
Over time, Lughnassa was Christianized and became the holiday known as Lammas (Loaf Mass) - celebrated when the first loaves of bread from the harvest were laid at the alter and offered to God.

Every alternate August (or late July, depending on the moon) prize cattle were brought for judging and sale, huge competitive contests drew wrestlers, riders and chariot drivers (and one must also assume, many young couples together).
These Lughnassa festivals served Munster, it is estimated, from about 300 BC until about 500 AD.
More recent stories, focussed on the deep waters of Lough Gur and the nearby presence of both the pale goddess Aine and her sunny sister Graine, led to stories of a local lord falling in love with Aine and being drawn into the underworld with her.

Lughnassa is the name for the Irish holiday which commemorates the funeral games held by the sun god Lugh to honor his foster mother Taillte.
The reason we chose Lughnassa instead of Lammas is because it occurs at the same time but it's not really a seasonal thing.
We wanted to have a celebration at this time because of it's place between mid-summer and harvest, and because there are so many prominent holidays in the winter-fall-spring we sometimes forget that our long summer is a time to frolic and celebrate also.

Lough Gur was also the setting for the third-year Lughnassa festivals, for which all of southwest Ireland gathered here in early August.
Kings and queens sat on a stone grandstand atop Cnoc Greine, watching chariots race a mile and a third plank-covered course around the west end of the lake.

I do this for two reasons - firstly because his day is my birthday (Lughnassa or Lammas) and secondly because he was known to be a superb craftsman - turning his hand to many crafts.
I have researched him and know his story (well one version of it) and feel very drawn to him.
