Cafédirect: Growers: Uganda - coffee(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The aims of the project are: to ensure a reliable supply of the highest quality Mount Elgon coffee; to improve the reputation of Bugisu arabica coffee on the world markets; and to ensure that the farmers are rewarded for their extra efforts by receiving a larger proportion of the market price.
The word 'gumutindo' means 'excellent quality' in Lugisu, the local language in Mbale district.
To qualify for membership of the project, farmers must have their own plot of land and demonstrate a willingness to improve the quality of their coffee by practising traditional methods of cultivation and processing.

10 August 1998 Finding a Lugisu New Testament Since we are endeavoring to learn the language of the Bagisu people, Laura and I wanted to get a few copies of the Bible in Lugisu.
The Lugisu New Testament was translated from English, from the Good News Bible (a simple English translation).
He told me how there was a great rush for the Lugisu NTs when they arrived, and that there was not a single copy left on the premises.
Because the Jews live scattered among their local neighbors, they speak Lugisu - the language of the Bagisu; they also speak Luganda, the language of Semei Kakungulu's tribe - the Baganda - as their prayers and blessings are conducted in Luganda.
Both Lugisu and Luganda are Bantu languages, which makes them fairly similar.
For instance in both languages, the prefix "Ba" or "Aba" means tribe, while "Lu" indicated language: the Ba-Ganda speak Lu-Ganda; the English were called the Aba-Angereza (Engeleza); the Jews are the Aba-Yudaya, and Hebrew is locally referred to as Lu-Yudaya.

Ten days of Lugisu running in my ears and stumbling out of my mouth.
Only this time, I knew what it was; and my shock was balanced by the joy I found in what I was doing.
I had four goals when I began: seeing the country from foot level, practice Lugisu intensively, mentor the church leaders, and get to know the church members where I stopped on a more personal level.

But from one region to the next -- and even one plot of land to the next -- different varieties grow more or less well.
The Lugisu saying that this the title of this print expresses the metaphorical way this applies to other things in life: what grows in your garden may not grow in mine; what works for you doesn't necessarily work for me; your luck isn't my luck...
The print depicts several of the many ways different sorts of bananas are seen moving from farm to market at any season of the year.

Since the year 2000 No Frontiers has been assisting with Bible translation into a major language of Eastern Uganda called Lumasaaba.
This Bantu language — also known as Masaba, Lugisu or Gisu — is spoken by just over one million people in the districts of Mbale and Sironko.
These districts lie in the foothills of Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano on the border with Kenya.

The people in Bufumbo were very friendly and were always curious to see what the Mzungu (that's me = white person) was up to next...
I tried to learn Lugisu, the local dialect, so I could talk to them a little.
I was amazed at how much is done by hand, from carrying kilos of stuff on their head, to crushing bolders with a hammer by hand to make a gravel foundation for the road!
The Africa programs are located in Tanzania and Uganda.
There are possibilities to study Swahili or Lugisu for an extra cost in the individual programs; language training is included in the summer program costs.
The summer program fees vary by country and length of stay, but start at $1975.
