Leased to an Austro-Hungarian company in the 1800s who later gave it to a British company (which then became the semi-independent state of North Borneo for some years), the Philippines argue they never formally gave the territory away.
During the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation the Philippines cut off diplomatic contact with Malaysia over the issue, but since then have accepted the status quo.Abusayyaf are also stay here at Sulu, and the Majority of them are Tausug and Maranaw.
