Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Luigi Alva appeared regularly in a number of important opera houses including Covent Garden, Chicago, and New York's Met.
Luigi Alva participated in the Decca recording of L'Italiana in Algeri with Teresa Berganza under the direction of Silvio Varviso, and achieved great distinction for his Rossini and Mozart interpretations.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Haarlem
When after the iconoclastic outbreak of 1566, then fortunately prevented in Haarlem, the Duke of Alva was sent to punish the Netherlands, the bishop wrote him a letter trying to move him to deal leniently with the guilty persons of his diocese.
In 1569, on account of his sluggishness, caused in part by the gout from which he was suffering, he was obliged by Alva to send in his resignation to Brussels and to Rome.
At that time the mission was governed, with authorization of the Propaganda, by Luigi Ciamberlani (1794-1828), who was at first obliged to reside in Münster.

Alva made his international debut 50 years ago at Teatro alla Scala, Milan, in the title role of Rossini's Barber of Seville, launching a career that saw him co-starring Maria Callas, Teresa Berganza and other great sopranos.
Born Luís Ernesto Alva y Talledo in Lima (1927), the tenor recalled that, when he was in the third year course at the Peruvian naval academy, a teacher turned his life around when she told him that his future was not in the navy but in his voice.
After leaving the navy, Alva travelled to Italy to study opera, and was invited to join the I Cadetti della Scala opera company in 1935, where he was proclaimed the most important lyric tenor of his generation.

She is matched by the comical performance of Luigi Alva as Count Almaviva alias Lindoro in his soft light tenor voice, his belcanto singing adding to the magnificence and beauty of the music.
Luigi Alva sings essentially the same performance as his studio recordings of the 1950's.
As for Alva, he also plays a convincing part as the debonaire Count, specially in the two love songs in act 1 (Ecco ridente in cielo and Se il mio nome saper voi bramate) where his light voice helps to convey the feeling.

The young Luigi Alva was also brilliant, and was probably very helped by his great performance in this recording.
Alva's Count is a miracle: he is youthful, spontaneous, enormously funny, and in beautiful voice (his "Si, se fosse una ricetta...ma un biglietto" from the aforementioned Act One quintet is one the best examples of how a lyric tenor can do nothing but provide endless joy).
Alva is a sweet-voiced and lyrical Almaviva, and Galliera's conducting is sparkling and witty.

Arlene Saunders makes a fine contribution, and provides a different, darker and warmer vocal color in nice contrast to the reedy and shimmering sounds of Grist and Popp.
Luigi Alva fares the least well of the soloists and is the recordings weak link.
Well known at the time for his Rossini roles, here the coloratura demands of Allesandro are too much for him, and his arias are tiresome for the listener.

This is a usually showpiece opera for sopranos, but Teresa Berganza is upstaged by the two villains, Enzo Dara and Paolo Montarsolo, who are nothing short of delightful in their blustering incompetence.
Luigi Alva sings with style and flair, and you get to see the young Claudio Abbado with 70's hair leading members of the La Scala Orchestra.
A couple of points for new listeners: Rossini's music features two things that you'll hear a lot in this opera: 1) vocal ornamentation, where the singer will put a lot of "frills" on the notes and 2) the music will often be increasing in volume (Rossini is noted for his"crescendos")

Il mondo della luna is a well-known comedy, splendidly treated by Haydn, and one in which a strong cast prove equally impressive.
Domenico Trimarchi sounds almost Leporello like in his blustering La ragazza col vecchione and Luigi Alva returns to the Haydnesque fray as Ecclitico, the fake astrologer, spinning his wares with insouciant and soothing charm (all false of course) in the (nevertheless) delightful Act I aria Un poco di denaro.
The smaller interpolations into other works are gallantly done and similarly successful.
