LUIGI CANINA (1795-1856), Italian archaeologist and architect, was born at Casale in Piedmont.

 DIDASKALIA: Ancient Theater Today
Although Canina’s plans and drawings are hypothetical and never meant to be realized in 3D, they still constitute a serious study of the ancient theatre, but, simply put, the Theatre of Pompey would not have stood up had it been built from Canina’s plans.
The dimensions of the external perimeter of the theatre shown in Canina’s plan, internal cross-section and outer elevation remain approximately the same in all drawings, however, the dimensions and number of architectural elements that are represented between the orchestra and the outer façade wall of the theatre vary considerably.
However, Canina is inconsistent in his use of this formula; the centre of the Vitruvian circle is not actually used to determine the central coordinating point; instead, a different point of origin, approximately 2m behind the central axis of the circle, is used as shown in Fig.

 Francis Penrose
Before the survey of Penrose, in the first half of the nineteenth century, one generally accepted as significant the estimate of the Roman foot made by Luigi Canina who was the first to use French units in testing the ruins of Rome.
Canina had settled for the value of 296 mm., which is fair enough (it implies a Roman libra of 324.017920 grams instead of 324.0; 5002.766 English grains instead of 5000).
From Canina’s figure for the Roman foot one could have derived a value of the Athenian drachma of classical times of 4.32237 grams (the correct figure being 4.320).

 Canina
Like all similar attempts, the reconstructions of the Theater of Pompey attempt to unite all known data about the ancient site into a comprehensible whole.
Combined with the evidence from the Forma Urbis and Vitruvius’ essay on theater building, Canina’s study of the remains in the cellars of Palazzo Pio, his analysis of the shapes and dimensions of Palazzo Pio and of the neighboring closely associated modern blocks provided the information for his initial reconstruction.
Baltard’s work gave to Canina’s later reconstruction drawings of the architectural details and a revised elevation of the arcaded facade: attached half columns between the arches, rather than free-standing columns.
