The meeting was jointly chaired by Minister Louis Galea (for the Nationalist Party); Luigi Cocilovo (EP -- EPP -- ED) and Mark Watts (EP -- PES).
Dr Galea who opened this meeting said that Malta was on the threshold of a new era to join the EU but Malta took the decision and the accession treaty is now signed.
EU co-chairman Luigi Cocilovo told the audience that he was looking forward to working together with the Maltese in the European Parliament, "The Joint Parliamentary Committee chapter may come to an end but it will certainly not be the last chapter of our co-operation."

Luigi Cocilovo, vice president of the Parliament and former general secretary of the CISL Italian union federation, closed the dinner with a speech welcoming the EPSU initiative and looking forward to a closer working relationship.
Anne’s opinion was that, despite the widespread criticisms from many different organisations, the Commission would not produce a revised document but would be open to key amendments such as the exclusion of the transport sector and temporary employment agencies.

He said that Malta was on the threshold of a new era to join the EU but “the Maltese nation took the decision, and the Accession Treaty is now signed.” The Maltese Co-chairman took the opportunity to praise the contribution of the JPC to Malta’s accession, which was a learning experience for both sides.
From the EU, Co-chairman Luigi COCILOVO expressed his gratitude to all those who served on the JPC.
He described the European Parliament as the main sounding board for European opinion and told the audience he was looking forward to working together with the Maltese in the EP.

MEPs agree with the Commission that revenues should be used to build up transport infrastructure.
The Parliament Transport Committee has adopted the report drafted by Italian MEP Luigi Cocilovo (EPP-ED) on the charging of heavy goods vehicles for the use of certain infrastructure.
MEPs supported the position of the European Commission, which is to allocate revenues from road tolls solely to the transport sector.

The appointed Rapporteur, Luigi Cocilovo (EPP, Italy) produced his draft report on the proposals on 8 January, in which a number of key amendments were proposed.
These included extending the scope of the Directive to private cars, changes to the minimum rates of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), and a recommendation that toll levels should be calculated with reference to the type of infrastructure upon which the vehicle is travelling.

 Member States and Commission split over road tolls | European Union Transport
The Parliament will vote in plenary on the road charging directive mid-April.
In its draft report, Parliament's rapporteur Luigi Cocilovo backs the Commission's view and notes that "the revenue from fees must be used for maintenance of the road infrastructure and for the benefit of the transport sector".
