Tosca - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tosca is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on Victorien Sardou's drama, La Tosca.
Illica wrote his libretto, and in October 1894, Franchetti, Ricordi, Illica and Giuseppe Verdi met Sardou to present him the libretto.
He started working on it in 1896, after the completion of La Bohème; Ricordi set Giuseppe Giacosa to work with Luigi Illica for the libretto, but Giacosa did not perform up to his own standards, and had several personal disputes with Sardou.

Puccini: La Bohème   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
Puccini's partnership with the playwright/librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa was one of the most successful in the whole history of Italian opera -- a meeting of great artistic minds akin to Verdi's association with Boito and Bellini's with Romani.
Although Illica and Giacosa are best remembered for their work with Puccini, each had an active career of his own.
Luigi Illica had a rough beginning: at an early age he ran away to sea and in 1876 he found himself fighting the Turks.

Illica began to move in the artistic circles of Milan and met the influential composers of the day, with whom be began to collaborate.
Illica's first important libretto was for Alfredo Catalani's La Wally (1892), although he did some work for some of the lesser known operatic composers of the day, such as Antonio Smareglia, Gaetano Luporino and Spiro Samara (it sounds like the rear guard of the Italian World Cup team!).
Illica's own personal penchant for adventure and high drama, as well as his delight in documenting historical accuracy, perfectly complemented the lyric works of the verismo period in which he lived and worked.

Land of Puccini - Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème (Librettists: Giuseppe Giocosa and Luigi Illica)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
Luigi Illica was convinced that Henry Murger's story about life in the Latin Quarter of Paris would make a successful and important opera, while the composer vascilated back and forth between this and other ideas.
While Illica wrote the scenario and developed the plot in detail, Giuseppe Giacosa would put the prose into verse and add refinement and polish to the libretto.
Illica and Giacosa painstakingly continued their work, although under some duress from the publisher, and at one point Giacosa completely lost interest and refused to continue.

At the time, Illica was also working on La Bohème with Puccini, and was finding progress just as slow with Franchetti on Tosca.
Illica had, by this time, already completed what Puccini called 'an extraordinary libretto,' although as he had with his previous opera, Puccini was to ask Illica and Giacosa to alter and revise their work over and over again, frustrating everyone in the process.
Because of the success of La Bohème and the number of new productions that were being mounted, Puccini spent much of 1897 travelling, although he stayed at Torre del Lago on and off for most of the spring, summer and autumn.

Tosca: opera in 3 acts, libretto by Luigi Illica (prose text) and Giuseppe Giacosa (verses), based on Victorien Sardou's play of the same name, music by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924), first performed 14th January 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi, Rome, with the following cast:
By then Puccini was working on 'Manon Lescaut', and Sardou complained that he did not like Puccini's music, although he may never have heard any of it as Puccini, with only 'Le Villi' and 'Edgar' to his credit, was not yet well known.
However, the news that Illica and Franchetti were working on 'Tosca' - even travelling to Paris to consult with Sardou - put aside any doubts.
