CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Giovanni Battista de Rossi
De Rossi, the modern founder of the science of Christian archaeology, was well-skilled in secular archaeology, a master of epigraphy, an authority on the ancient and medieval topography of Rome, an excellent historian, and a very productive and many-sided author.
De Rossi's extraordinary knowledge of the most obscure monuments of the civilized countries of Europe, and his thorough familiarity with manuscript sources, made it possible for him, as undisputed leader and master, to guide the science of Christian archaeology, during several decades, into new paths.
De Rossi's brother Michele Stefano was his zealous assistant in the exploration of the catacombs; the geological questions connected with these subterranean places of burial and all kindred subjects are treated by Michele in separate papers in "Roma Soterranea".

As a statesman, Rossi was a man of signal ability and intrepid character, but it is as an economist that his name will be best remembered.

After serving various dukes he became organist at S. Luigi dei Francesi in Rome in 1633, but moved to the Florentine court in 1635.
Apart from the two operas and two oratorios mentioned, Rossi's most important contribution was to the development of the cantata.

Rossi's music comes to life when he's writing for ensembles, especially a trio of sopranos who sing both the Graces (they warble a particularly heavenly lullaby for Euridice) and the Fates.
Lucy Graham's choreography, though, especially a grotesque dance for red devils and a number in cute animal costumes (a frog with a moth stuck to its long tongue, a slitheringly expanding snail), were a welcome -- and literal -- change of pace.
Rossi fails the drama of the Orpheus myth by allowing its most tragic moment to take place off stage: Orpheus's breaking of Pluto's warning not to turn and look at his wife as he leads her out of the underworld.

Raphael's greatest masterpiece, possibly the only work he executed without help during his last years, is the Portrait of Pope Leo X and Cardinals Luigi de' Rossi and Giulio de' Medici (later to become Pope Clement VII), both relatives of the Pope.
This group portrait (which created a sensation, notwithstanding the existence of precedents) is focused on the central figure of the Pope.
The two Cardinals, Luigi de' Rossi on Leo's right (whose sharp features, modelled by strong chiaroscuro effects, suggest the hand of Giulio Romano) and Giulio de' Medici on his left, act as a royal escort.

 BBC - Films - Amarcord
As Fellini himself once commented: "My films from my past, recount memories that are completely invented." The scatological jokes about masturbation, belching, and farting coexist with an air of melancholy that's maintained by Nino Rota's evocative music.
Fellini constantly draws our attention to the fact that we're watching a piece of fiction: the residents' stories are far from reliable, actors deliver their lines to camera, and the elderly narrator (Luigi Rossi) is interrupted by off-screen disruptions.
Yet there are still images to treasure, such as a peacock emerging from the fog, the collective wonder at the vision of the great ship (represented by a cardboard model!), and finally the bittersweet aftermath of Gradisca's wedding.
