Luigi Sturzo: A Prophet for Today - Homiletic & Pastoral  Review - May 2000
Luigi Sturzo was born in Caltagirone, Sicily, on November 26, 1871.
Sturzo was among the first of the sociologists to recognize that societies do not only advance or go forward (progress), but they can be seen with the help of various criteria either to advance to greater rationalization or to fall back.
Sturzo held that two principles regulate human activity, the inner principle of rationality and the external principle of the conditioning factors in a particular society.

The Ethical Foundation of the Market Economy: A Reflection on Economic Personalism in the Thought of Luigi Sturzo   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Sturzo is aware of the fact that in free countries the market economy prevails as a natural extension of the principle of liberty in all spheres of human activity, and that in dictatorial countries, the command economy prevails.
Sturzo's fundamental lesson is encapsulated in the concept of liberty in its entirety and indivisibility.
Luigi Sturzo thought that popularism was not an ideology, but a social-economic doctrine, on the basis of which to bring into existence a proper capitalism, a widespread and unrestricted intensive growth of economy.

Summary – Sturzo was a staunch supporter of the representative form of government, convinced as he was of the historical superiority of the liberal system in comparison with both dynastic absolutism and the utopia of direct democracy.
Sturzo, instead, basing himself on the principles of Christian democratic culture, on the one hand supported the classic division of state powers while on the other he asserted that the control and guidance of public authority were the tasks of organized groups in civil society.
Sturzo was convinced that the failure of his projects of parliamentary reform brought about above all by the fact that the capitalist model, established in Italy through the protectionist policy of the last twenty years of the nineteenth century, had led to the centralization and burocratization of the liberal state.

Bishop Pennisi highlighted Father Sturzo's "political charity," which continues to be relevant "at a time when we witness the rejection of political participation, especially among youth, as well as a crisis of the spirit of solidarity among individuals, classes and nations."
For Sturzo, a society is not a self-subsistent entity.
Even though Don Luigi has a place in history as the godfather of the Christian Democratic party, he consistently called for political action by Catholics, not in the name of the Church but as citizens concerned with true freedom and democracy.

 Democrazia Cristiana
The Christian Democratic party of Italy, Democrazia Cristiana, commonly called the democristiani or "DC", dominated government for nearly half a century until its demise amid a welter of corruption allegations in 1992-94.
The party was in part a revival of the People's Party[?] created in 1919 by the priest Don Luigi Sturzo[?] but declared illegal by the Fascist regime in 1925 despite the presence of some members in Benito Mussolini's first government.
As Fascism's ruin approached in the latter years of World War II, the Christian Democrats started organising post-Fascist Italy in certain competition but also for a time in coalition with the parties of the center and left.

On the score of a mediation between an "interpretative" approach and realistic tradition, Sturzo utilizes the notion of form — meant as one of the guiding concepts of sociology — in an innovative way both as regards the traditional metaphysic and the classical theory of "forms".
The Sturzian sociological doctrine —which intends placing itself as correction and overcoming of associationism, on one side, of organicism, on the other, — corresponds therefore functionally to the vision of a society not repressed within a prefigured structure, but open to the planning of always new social forms and meant to guarantee their free game.
Thus, Sturzo has offered to the Catholic world a new social and political doctrine where the liberal criticism of democracy is not disjointed from the democratic criticism of liberalism and where, both, at the same time, find only in Christianity a secure ground for foundation.

The 88 years of his life included the end of the papal states, the unification of Italy, the beginnings of the modern workers' movements, the birth of Christian Democrat parties in Europe, the First and Second World Wars, fascism, the fall of the Italian monarchy and the advent of democracy, Cardinal Ruini said.

Popularism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Popularism (italian: popolarismo) is a political doctrine conceived by Don Luigi Sturzo as a middle way between Socialism and Liberalism and opposed to Fascism because of its stress on Democracy.
It was the basis for the Italian People's Party (Italian: Partito Popolare Italiano) and, after World War II, contributed in the founding of European Christian Democracy.
The popularism of Don Luigi Sturzo can be roughly described to American readers as a democratic kind of agrarian populism or Silvio Berlusconi can be defined as a populist in the same way Ross Perot or George W. Bush are.

Concretely, in his recently published book, Hungarian Church-State Relationships: A Socio-Historical Analysis, Torok’s major objective is to provide a detailed chronological account of the Hungarian past with a particular emphasis on the complex dynamic between the local church and state from the conversion of the Hungarians to Christianity to the 2002 parliamentary elections.
This approach is all the more important as it allowed Torok to conceptualize “a set of analytical questions” to be applied in the Hungarian context.
