CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Giovanni Battista de Rossi
De Rossi, the modern founder of the science of Christian archaeology, was well-skilled in secular archaeology, a master of epigraphy, an authority on the ancient and medieval topography of Rome, an excellent historian, and a very productive and many-sided author.
De Rossi's extraordinary knowledge of the most obscure monuments of the civilized countries of Europe, and his thorough familiarity with manuscript sources, made it possible for him, as undisputed leader and master, to guide the science of Christian archaeology, during several decades, into new paths.
De Rossi's brother Michele Stefano was his zealous assistant in the exploration of the catacombs; the geological questions connected with these subterranean places of burial and all kindred subjects are treated by Michele in separate papers in "Roma Soterranea".

These laws, seen by Rossi as identical to the rhythmical laws of a live recitation, may well produce a conflict with both the laws of syntax and the abstract metrical schemes.
Similar to Rossi, in his study of the so-called "Meyer's Law" as applied to Homeric hexameter Mario Cantilena proceeds from the assumption that after Fraenkel Greek hexameter cannot be regarded any longer as simply a realization of abstract metrical schemes.
Rather, in the organization of syntax within it and in its metrical characteristics, the elegiac hexameter functions as an integral and organic component of the couplet as a whole: the modifications observed in its metrical structure all emanate directly from its function as the initial line of elegiac couplet" (vol.

Este Libro es de Don Luis Rossi, kept in the British Library in London, is a faithful representative of the musical tastes of the early Baroque.
It is a hand-written manuscript in which the young Luigi Rossi, during the time of his service to the Court of Naples, noted highly significant pieces by composers who had been important to him during his training, and had fed his imagination.
The manuscript's Spanish title is not surprising, given the close ties between Naples and Spain at the time; in fact all the composers included in Rossi's manuscript - those of both Italian and Flemish origin - worked in the Italian peninsula.

As Fellini himself once commented: "My films from my past, recount memories that are completely invented." The scatological jokes about masturbation, belching, and farting coexist with an air of melancholy that's maintained by Nino Rota's evocative music.
Fellini constantly draws our attention to the fact that we're watching a piece of fiction: the residents' stories are far from reliable, actors deliver their lines to camera, and the elderly narrator (Luigi Rossi) is interrupted by off-screen disruptions.
Yet there are still images to treasure, such as a peacock emerging from the fog, the collective wonder at the vision of the great ship (represented by a cardboard model!), and finally the bittersweet aftermath of Gradisca's wedding.
