González Macchi llegó a la jefatura del Estado des la presidencia del Congreso tras la grave crisis ocurrida en el país en marzo de 1999 como consecuencia del asesinato del vicepresidente Luis María Argaña y la posterior renuncia del entonces mandatario Raúl Cubas.

Luis Ángel González Macchi (born December 13, 1947) is a Paraguayan politician.
As the president of Paraguay's legislature, González succeeded to the office of president on March 29, 1999 following the assassination six days earlier of the vice-president, Luis María Argaña, and the subsequent resignation of President Raúl Cubas Grau among accusations that the assassination was linked to Cubas's political party.
As president, González attempted to create a coalition government to spur cooperation within Paraguay and repair the economy which had been damaged by the political crisis.
