A cohort of Salvador Agron, Luis Hernandez became known as “The Umbrella Man” for his role in the stabbing deaths of two teenage boys in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen in August of 1959.
Hernandez picked up an umbrella along the way and used it to attempt to stab one of the teenagers, but it wouldn’t penetrate, (don’t you HATE it when that happens?) so he used it to beat him with it instead.
Hernandez, who pled guilty to manslaughter, received a sentence of 7½ to 15 years and was eventually re-tried, re-convicted and released on good time.

On August 24, after nearly a 10-year legal battle, immigration judge Edward Kandler in Seattle granted legal permanent residency to Laura Luis Hernández, a Mexican woman who came to the U.S. to escape her husband’s beatings.
The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled last October 7 that Luis Hernández was entitled to suspension of deportation under the 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), overturning earlier rejections by an immigration judge and the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA).
The VAWA protects immigrants who have “been battered or subjected to extreme cruelty in the U.S.”; Luis Hernández’s husband beat her in Mexico, but the appeals court ruled that his phone calls begging her to return there constituted “behavior during the ‘contrite’ phase of domestic violence” which met the criteria for “extreme cruelty”.
