  MAGAZINE | NEWS | Mandoki | VOLUME 26-6: MARCH 2002
It was understandable that the "Conversation With Luis Mandoki" seminar at the DGA centered around the director-actor relationship.
Luis Mandoki has directed many memorable performances, from Rachel Chagall in Gaby, to Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia in When a Man Loves a Woman, to Susan Sarandon in White Palace, to name but a few.
Mandoki is eager to do a film that would take him back to his native Mexico, to do a story "that goes back to my culture." When he first came to Hollywood, he felt alienated by the cultural differences, "like the humor, or the way audiences react emotionally.

 Luis Mandoki @ Filmbug
In a short time, director Luis Mandoki, a native of Mexico, has evolved to become one of Hollywood's foremost filmmakers.
The Mexican motion picture that brought Mandoki worldwide attention was Gaby--A True Story, the poignant study of a woman he learned about from a television program, a writer coping with cerebral palsy.
Now a resident of Santa Barbara, California, Mandoki was born and raised in Mexico City where he became a student of fine arts, an interest he pursued at the San Francisco Art Institute and the London College of Printing.

SPLICEDwire | "Angel Eyes" review (2001)
Against her better judgement, Sharon agrees to see her savior socially, even though he avoids telling her anything about himself except that his name is "Catch." The commercials get all their suspense from these scenes as director Luis Mandoki ("Message in a Bottle") lets a little danger hang in the air.
Catch soon knows where she lives, where she jogs and even where she keeps her gun, when all she knows about him is that by night he sleeps on a futon in an empty tough-neighborhood flat and by day he wanders the streets lost in thought.
Mandoki has faith in the intelligence of his audience, allowing Catch's struggle to be unveiled slowly and indirectly while Caviezel dexterously balances the elusive, almost bipolar, intricacies of the character.

The New York Times > Movies > Mr. Mayor and Me in Mexico
In an unusual twist, it has been handled by the Mexican film director Luis Mandoki, who, during 16 years in Hollywood, made eight pictures, including "White Palace," "When a Man Loves a Woman" and "Message in a Bottle." He eventually returned to Mexico, where in 2004 he shot "Innocent Voices." Now Mr.
Mandoki's approach is that he says he is not a Democratic Revolutionary Party supporter, nor even much interested in party politics.
Mandoki's crew consists of two alternating cameramen, Ignacio Miranda and Lorenzo Hagerman (who is lending his equipment), and Ms.

From a cinematic standpoint, however, Luis Mandoki's direction relies a little too much on melodramatic closeups and on cute pre-teen shenanigans that detract from the story's harrowing truth.
Mandoki was impressed by the fact that it was a "true story, from the point of view of a young boy," as opposed to the generally impersonal war stories covered in the news.
Director Luis Mandoki was outraged by the fact that the Mexican government's film regulating board slapped Voces inocentes with a "no one under 18 admitted" rating.

 AboutFilm.com - Angel Eyes (2001)
Mandoki learned from some of his mistakes: he foregoes the epic sweeping cameras-cum-swelling violins approach that characterized Message in a Bottle in favor of a more understated tone (so understated that at times the film is inert), and he has a hipper cast.
Like in Message in a Bottle, Mandoki seems to think that if he wallows in the gut-wrenching "emotion" of a moment long enough, no matter how broadly written the moment is, or how implausible the whole premise, or how flat the direction, the audience can't help but be affected.
Mandoki probably thinks he's trafficking in archetypal themes of love and loss, but he's really just shoveling hooey.

SPLICEDwire | "Trapped" review (2002) Luis Mandoki, Charlize Theron, Stuart Townsend
Director Luis Mandoki ("Angel Eyes") maintains the movie's tension from start to finish, thanks largely to the performances of the menacing Bacon, who really turns on the smarm, and the emotionally resourceful Theron, who eventually musters enough maternal fear and tears to turn the corner of parental credibility.
But in making her character sharp enough to out-wit her captor, the film fails again and again because each time she takes the upper hand (which she does several times), she has to relinquish it in increasingly foolish and contrived ways to keep the plot from resolving too quickly.
This begins a domino effect, and the film completely falls apart in the convoluted, far-fetched last act, which includes one villain's oh-so-convenient change of heart, an airplane chase stunt sequence and an absurd climax in which hundreds of witnesses stand around doing nothing while central characters fight for their lives.

Amazon.co.uk: White Palace [1990]: Video   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Glenn Savan's depressing and self-loathing novel about a 27-year-old upper-class Jewish widower mired in self-pity after his beloved wife dies, and who finds love and sexual rebirth with a trailer-trash older woman, was brought to the big screen by the competent director Luis Mandoki (When a Man Loves a Woman, Message in a Bottle).
White Palace nudges at the dark journey and the smashing of illusion that was at the heart of the novel, but there is still a fairy-tale element to the film that negates the earthy essence that distinguished the book.
It is an adult film and, as such, can also deal with sex in a relationship and how important that is. Having set all that boring stuff aside it is very enjoyable and well worth watching.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Luis Mandoki - 2002 - Trapped Movies Review
Luis Mandoki (Angel Eyes) displays a level of skill behind the controls that he hasn't even hinted at in his past offerings.
Like all kidnapping thrillers, Trapped is certainly roller-coaster pacing—with ups and downs coming at steady intervals—but unlike similar films in the genrĂ©, it works to the movie's advantage.
John Ottman (who composed the score for the brilliant The Usual Suspects) writes an outstanding score for Trapped, and Luis Mandoki uses it perfectly.

Director Luis Mandoki (ANGEL EYES) knows that it can't hurt to pull a few heartstrings to keep an audience firmly planted on the edge of their seats.
Dad no sooner boards his commuter seaplane (which he pilots himself) than all three are separately taken hostage by sophisticated kidnappers (Kevin Bacon, Courtney Love, and Pruitt Taylor Vince), throwing their idyllic family life into jeopardy.
TRAPPED pushes the envelope of the classic kidnapping story because director Mandoki takes full advantage of the parent-child bond to heighten the sense of pathos and urgency.

It seems, at first, that Gerald Di Pego's script will turn in a supernatural direction--or at least a metaphysical one--but it doesn't, and director Luis Mandoki navigates an emotional minefield while acknowledging the walls that people build between themselves and the traumatic events they wish to forget.
And from that whole list, there is probably one that stands out-- that one “special” moment, or the most significant-- one that was so good you’d like to relive it over and over again, or so bad that you’d like to erase it from your memory forever.
The mystery surrounding Catch is what drives this film, and Mandoki does an excellent job of presenting it.
