Esteves' (born "Luis Raul Esteves Völckers"), father was of German descent and had served in the Spanish Army in Puerto Rico.
Esteves saw a news advertisement announcing examinations for the entry into the West Point Academy and without his parents' knowledge, he applied, passed the exam and was accepted to West Point, thus becoming the first Puerto Rican to do so.
Esteves graduated first in his class which was impresseive given that both Dwight D. Eisenhower(future President) and Omar Bradley where among his fellow classmates.

Other Puerto Ricans who distinguished themselves during the Korean War were: Private First Class Fernando Luis Garcia, who belonged to Company I, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Division and who became the first Puerto Rican recipient of the Medal of Honor when he covered a grenade with his body, saving the lives of his fellow Marines.

Heck when Luis Ferrer tried to start a program in the late sixties to bring English teachers into the education system, many accused him of trying to indoctrinate students and prepare the island for statehood.
