Encyclopedia: Luisa Miller   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Luisa Miller is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Salvatore Cammarano, based on the play Kabale und Liebe by Friedrich von Schiller.
Miller enters and tells her who 'Carlo' really is. He then vows to be revenged on a heartless seducer; but Rodolfo has entered in time to overhear his words and swears solemnly that he intends to make Luisa his wife.
Luisa Miller is one among several Verdi operas in which the father-daughter relationship becomes terribly important; Rigoletto, Aida, the unrealized King Lear and even La Traviata are among Verdi’s other operas with a pivotal father-daughter theme.

Luisa Miller was the second of the two operas he wrote for the Teatro S Carlo in Naples.
Luisa Miller opens with a symphonic overture, based on a single theme, and not a medley of tunes from what is to follow.
Luisa offers her well known prayer in the second act, when confronted by Wurm, Tu puniscimi, o Signore (Punish me, O Lord), followed by her later cabaletta in which she contemplates her death, after her act of renunciation, A brani, a brani, o perfido (Torn in shreds, traitor).

Luisa, daughter of an old soldier, is in love with a young man she knows as Carlo but who is actually Rodolfo, son of the local lord, Walter.
The two lovers proclaim undying fidelity, but Miller, Luisa's father, is dubious, and his fears are confirmed when Walter's retainer, Wurm, who also loves Luisa and hopes to marry her, reveals Rodolfo's true identity.
When Walter storms in shortly afterward and is about to have both Luisa and her father consigned to prison, Rodolfo secures their freedom by threatening to reveal how his father, with Wurm's assistance, murdered his cousin to gain his present position.

Luisa's father, Miller, is unhappy with the match, as is Walter's retainer, Wurm, who loves Luisa.
I suppose his aged voice added a touch of verisimilitude to the proceedings, but as this was at the expense of every technical aspect of his singing - not least in the cadenza of his opening aria - it was difficult to avoid cringing during his big moments.

Elijah Moshinsky’s unimaginative conception pointlessly updates the opera's original feudal Swiss setting ("a small village in a Tyrolese area in the first half of the 17th century") to Dickensian England, eliminating the specific historical context which drives the plot.
I can't help contrast the Met's flaccid effort with Christopher Alden’s thrilling 2000 Spoleto Festival’s Luisa Miller, set in a Tyrolean, feudal, alpine society which fully dramatized the powerlessness of Luisa, the religious fanaticism of the peasantry, and the absolute power of the aristocracy.
Alden’s regimented chorus placement emphasized the repression and passive formality of the mob’s responses.

Luisa Miller was composed for Naples, a city whose rather old-fashioned operatic tastes may have constrained Verdi to return to a more mainstream style of composition.
But Verdi brought to Luisa Miller a maturity and sophistication derived from his experiments earlier in the decade and his first extended stay in Paris.
Particularly telling are the new refinement in his orchestration and the larger role assigned to the orchestra, the greater flexibility in the musical forms, and the important use of choruses.

Olivia Fuchs's new production of Luisa Miller relocates Verdi's bleak study of class and generational conflicts to the UK in the mid-1950s.
Much of her staging is dominated by hunting imagery, forcefully underscoring the bitter irony that Count Walter, in trying to ensnare Luisa and her father, will inadvertently catch and kill his own son in the same trap.
Sometimes, the tone falters - the lethal dose of poison is administered in a mug of tea rather than a jug of water, which strikes a false note - while Fuchs's use of ritualised, Peter Sellars-type gestures for the chorus sits uneasily with the rest of it.

You can hear Verdi's genius growing through the course of this opera, in part because it is about (among other things) parent-child relationships, a theme that stirred him to the depths of his soul.
Luisa Miller begins in the manner of early Verdi, goes on to a foretaste of his middle period (Rigoletto, Traviata) and even hints at his late manner (Aida, Otello).
Placido Domingo's name is (coincidentally) evoked in his show-stopping aria, "Quando le sere al placido," and that may help explain the special energy he puts into it.
