Franz Brentano   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Brentano was strongly influenced by Aristotle and the Scholastics as well as by the empiricist and the positivist movements of the early nineteenth century.
Brentano thought that this interpretation of his position was obviously absurd, for it would be “paradoxical to the extreme to say that a man promises to marry an ens rationis and fulfills his promise by marrying a real person” (Psychology, 385).
Brentano proposes a theory of truth that is closely connected to his theory of ‘evidence.’ For Brentano, it is judgments, i.e., mental phenomena, which are true or false.

1891: Brentano vs. Marx   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Brentano's constantly repeated declaration that labour protection legislation and trade association organisations are fitted to improve the condition of the working class is by no means his own discovery.
Brentano's claim that they "are capable of paralysing the fateful effects of the reserve army" is ridiculous boasting.
Brentano would gladly convert wage-slaves into contented wage-slaves, he must hugely exaggerate the advantageous effects of labour protection, the resistance of trade associations, social piecemeal legislation, etc.; and as we are able to confront these exaggerations with the simple facts -- hence his fury.

 Methodenstreit
Menger's reply was a pamphlet entitled The Errors of Historicism in the German Political Economy in 1884.
It would in due course include thinkers such as Lujo Brentano[?] and Werner Sombart[?] for the Historical School, and Eugene Boehm-Bawerk[?], Friedrich Wieser[?], and Ludwig von Mises for the Austrian School.
The term "Austrian school of economics" came into existence as a result of the Methodenstreit, when Schmoller used it in an unfavourable review of one of Menger's later books and was intended to convey an impression of backwardness and obscurantism of Hapsburg Austria compared to the more modern Prussians.

Wagner is the main protagonist of a specific school of economics and social policy, called "State Socialism" ("Staatssozialismus"), which is a specific form of Kathedersozialismus.

As was mentioned, he had difficulties with Schmoller and was an enemy of Lujo Brentano – and these two were about his closest colleagues.

Critique of Interventionism by Ludwig von Mises
Lujo Brentano and his School promoted a syndicalistic program, although in many questions of daily politics they joined ranks with the other Socialists of the Chair and, together with the Social Democrats, fought against liberalism.
Brentano carefully veiled his position, but nevertheless it was syndicalism.
Brentano wrote this in the spring of 1918, shortly after the collapse of the Schmoller system, and shortly before the collapse of the Brentano system became evident.

The dissertation Fukuda completed under Brentano's supervision at the University of Munich in 1899 was remarkable for being the very first systematic, scholarly analysis of Japan's social and economic history, and it was accordingly published in a prestigious German monograph series.
Interestingly, the indiscriminate and reflexive use of the term "conservative" in referring to German social scientists influential in Meiji Japan has resulted in the erroneous labeling of Lujo Brentano as a "conservative social reformer" when in fact he was a passionate, life-long left-liberal.
One common theme bringing this generation of scholars together was extensive use of statistics and an intense ethical orientation and interest in social reform and welfare policy, the latter a passion born of the fissures in the newly unified German Reich.

It was my good fortune, in particular, to come in close contact, as their student and assistant, with the two most original thinkers and most brilliant personalities of the period: Lujo Brentano and Max Weber, the foremost social scientists of their age.
They saw the unique part Bismarck's Second Reich played in the revival of authoritarianism and fought it as a threat to the progress of occidental civilization.
As early as 1881, Lujo Brentano warned that adventuring into governmentalized medicine is the first step toward the Neo-Welfare State, which in turn opens up a road to national catastrophe - in the long run.
