Sir Samuel Luke Fildes, R.) was an English painter and illustrator born at Liverpool and trained in the South Kensington and Royal Academy schools.
At the age of seventeen Luke Fildes became a student at the Warrington School of Art.
Fildes shared his grandmother's concern for the poor and in 1869 joined the staff of The Graphic newspaper, an illustrated weekly edited by the social reformer, William Luson Thomas.

Samule Luke Fildes was born in 1843 in the town of Liverpool, However, after he was adopted by his grandmother he spent most of his childhood in Chester, where he attended art and design classes during the evening.
Fildes took great pains to make sure that his pictures were authentic and of genuine people from the streets, an example of this, was when painting, The Doctor (1891), Fildes recreated a whole poor bedroom scene in his studio.
Luke Fildes, who was knighted in 1906, died in 1918.

In the 1840s Mary Fildes ran the Shrewsbury Arms in Chester and was a leading figure in the Female Chartist movement.

A leading figure in the Chartist Movement of the 1840s, she was one of the speakers at the Manchester meeting that led to the Peterloo Massacre in 1819.
The result was, as we have seen above, Millais's recommending former Royal Academy student Luke Fildes, whose work to the Pre-Raphaelite "seemed to combine the aesthetic ideals of the new school of fl-and-white illustrators and the social consciousness of the older generation" (Cohen 221), that is, Cruikshank, Seymour, and Hablot Knight Browne.
By the turn of the century, Fildes was acknowledged to be one of the best-paid portrait artists in Britain, having painted such celebrities as Sir Cecil Rhodes and several members of the royal family.

Fildes (usually referred to as "Luke Fildes") was raised by his grandmother, a prominent political activist in Liverpool, and his artwork was thereafter profoundly influenced by social concerns.
Fildes, "while in the house of mourning, I conceived the idea of 'The Empty Chair,' and at once got my colours from London, and made the water-colour drawing a very faithful record of his library." An engraved reproduction of this picture appeared in "The Graphic," Christmas, 1870.
Fildes turned primarily to oil paintings of social subjects as well as commissioned portraits of prominent individuals, including paintings of the royal family which hang in Buckingham Palace.
