Luke Kelly was born on November 17, 1940, into a working class family in Sheriff Street, a quarter of a mile from Dublin's O'Connell Street.
Luke Kelly was by now active in the Connolly Asssociation, a left-wing grouping strongest among the exiles in England.
In 1964 Luke Kelly left the group for nearly two years and was replaced by Bobby Lynch.

Luke Kelly, (17 November 1940 - 30 January 1984) was an Irish singer and folk musician from Dublin, Ireland, most famous as a member of the band The Dubliners.
Luke remained a politically engaged musician, and many of the songs he recorded dealt with social issues, the arms race and war, workers' rights and Irish nationalism, ("The Springhill Disaster", "Second World Song", "When Margaret was Eleven", "Joe Hill", "The Button Pusher", "Alabama 1958" and "God Save Ireland" all being good examples of his concerns).
Luke Kelly was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 1980, and died in 1984.

Sinn Féin councillors put forward a motion to erect a statue of Kelly in the docklands or the north inner city to mark the 20th anniversary of his death.
Councillor Christy Burke said he was delighted the motion had been backed unanimously and the council had agreed to commission the statue and find a suitable location for its erection.

Ronnie Drew often referred jokingly to him as "a communist who even gave pennies to the poor." In fact, Kelly was a man of strong views and many of his best-known songs had a social message.

On the 30th of January, 1984, it is said that the whole of Dublin grieved the early death of Luke Kelly.
In October 2001, the show 'A Tribute To Luke Kelly' was launched in Dublin's Hotpress HQ before an audience which included Luke's family and friends.
The show proved to be a huge success and the band were booked for a three month residency at the Olympia Theatre, Dublin, and have since continued to amaze audiences following powerful performances in many prominent Irish venues.
