Attempts were made to exclude the Communist party from the elections, and this led to general strikes, or `Nepal Bandhs' in Kathmandu and the surrounding area, which were very disruptive for several days.
(Lukla is where I would begin my trek in the Everest region.) I searched my luggage a several times for them, but could not find them, and I began to suspect that these tickets, which were not stapled to the others, had been left on the plane on one of my flights.
I had been informed by the students that his picture was in one edition of the Lonely Planet Nepal guide book, although we couldn't find the picture in my copy, and that he had been doing this for many years.

When planes take off from Lukla, they have to put the brakes on, rev the engines up to full force, then let go of the brakes just as the plane begins to scoot down the short runway.
Driving through Kathmandu is quite the adventure as there are few signs, no lane markers, and street traffic consists of buses, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, rickshaws, pedestrians, and the occassional cow who may decide to have a nap in the middle of the road.
Lukla is a four day walk from Kathmandu or a 1.5-hour plane flight.

We fly in to Lukla on the 1st of september and are really after some prices of the lodges on the way up to Base camp, we plan to eat cheap and have sleeping bags to bunk down, but we can't seem to find any prices of accomodation and food outside of a package booking..
I am going to nepal on aug 31, for 10 days and would like to india or china while I am there but have no idea if it is possible to visit 2 countries in 10 days.

It is clear that tourism in Nepal is in crisis for the moment (2003).
On the other hand you need more time to get a good idea about the country while reading them, and the Nepal guidebook needs an update as it is from 1999.

Actually, it was okay until the big climb to Lukla, which was 600 meters up through mud and rain.
Andreas and I had to arrange plane tickets back to Kathmandu from Lukla, so we started up towards Lukla, while Robin and John went on to the next town.
By Lukla, I was totally out of steam - both energy and water - and felt so shitty I was ready to get a flight out the next day.

The airstrip in Lukla is now tarsealed, no longer the gravel pitch it once was.
If the Lukla airstirp is covered in clouds, or if the KTD valley is foggy (a very likely occurrence these days), planes will not leave on time.
The lodges by the way are much better now compared to 9 years ago, some even have nice sun-rooms for you to sit down and enjoy your cup of tea or hot lemonade when you stop for a break during the day...

In the Khumbu region of Nepal here, there are actually two monasteries of most importance, One in Thame and one in Tengboche.
And also we were presented with Frungis (sic) which is similar to a little red cord that a Rinpoche or lama will tie around your neck, and that's also pretty much the same purpose that the Khatas were, and so this was a very high point of the trip.
We had a beautiful sunny day's walk through very scenic Sherpa Villages here in the lower river valley region and got camp set just in time for thunder showers to come through, but that was okay we were nice and comfortable and out of the weather when it came through.

It is the last airstrip before base camp (still another week and half away by foot) and is handy if you don't fancy the walk in or walk out from Jiri...
Lukla isn't the nicest of towns but supplies can be bought here for your trek and it's cheaper than the villages on route.
Accomodation is cheap on the trek as long as you eat a meal in your lodge.
