 Lullaby of Broadway - Film - Entertainment - theage.com.au
For every Broadway lullaby that hit the right notes as a Hollywood melody - like Grease, which segued from stage to screen in 1978 and scored double successes - there was a chorus of very off-key failures.
The theatre world heaped 12 Tonys on them in 2002 and Broadway enthusiasts paid as much as $300 a seat to see them in a brief return run a year later.
Broadway fave Bebe Neuwirth, for example, was at least as obvious a contender for her role, Velma Kelly, as Lane and Broderick would be as Bialystock and Bloom in the stage-to-screen transition of their show a couple of years later.

There's no real text here beyond Broadway is neat and show people are zany, hence there's no real addition to Day's perception, the music's perception, or anything else.
The only extra is a Day trailer gallery encompassing Lullaby of Broadway, Romance on the High Seas, It's a Great Feeling, April in Paris, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, and Lucky Me.

DVD Verdict Review - Lullaby Of Broadway
The choreography throughout is great to watch, and had this been an hour long musical revue without the plot crammed in, Lullaby of Broadway would probably be better respected than it is. Since this film takes place in a glossy, shallow world, it's not important that the characters only care about appearances.
Lullaby of Broadway did little for this critic's cynical, postmodern outlook, but my parents weren't even born yet when this film was produced.
Lullaby of Broadway had no aspirations to stretch the boundaries of the musical genre, but it fits in just fine.

Now, Michael Kantor's Broadway: The American Musical is on hand to chart the development of one of this country's few original art forms from roughly 1900 to the present.
For the art form to continue to grow and thrive in a hostile economic and cultural climate, these points have to be made crystal clear to the novice and presented in a take-charge, rally-the-troops way for those who need no convincing.

Apparently Doris Day sells well on DVD as Warner has now elected to give the one-time MGM star one of the most impressive boxed-set treatments to date.
"Lullaby of Broadway" really shouldn't be as pleasant as it is, but with Day uncorking her charms, it's hard to resist and easy to overlook the flaws.
The 1951 full-frame picture isn't one of her best musical performances -- this was a Warner effort, made before her MGM contract -- but it clearly suggests the talent that MGM would later see and hone to a fine instrument.

To fully appreciate the text, a thorough knowledge of the “golden age” (Grant suggests no less than four alternative terms) of Broadway musical theater is assumed.
These omissions are odd, considering the care he gives to the interaction between other genres and the Broadway musical.
So this is a book devoted specifically, as its title and cover art claims, to what the golden age of Broadway musicals arose from, and why we consider it to be long over.

The 1951 Warner Brothers release, "Lullaby of Broadway" was a big success at the box-office.
While I don't think it quite measures up to some of Day's other Warners pictures, "Lullaby of Broadway" is nevertheless a tuneful formula picture, blessed with some fine talent and if you're not tapping your feet during Day's snappy rendition of the title tune, then you need to check for a pulse.
