For every Broadway lullaby that hit the right notes as a Hollywood melody - like Grease, which segued from stage to screen in 1978 and scored double successes - there was a chorus of very off-key failures.
The theatre world heaped 12 Tonys on them in 2002 and Broadway enthusiasts paid as much as $300 a seat to see them in a brief return run a year later.
Broadway fave Bebe Neuwirth, for example, was at least as obvious a contender for her role, Velma Kelly, as Lane and Broderick would be as Bialystock and Bloom in the stage-to-screen transition of their show a couple of years later.

Besides including several songs by other writers, most notably "Hooray for Hollywood" and "By a waterfall", this lavishly documented set is also a tribute to Warner Bros's veteran music director Ray Heindorf, whose agile, expansive arrangements skilfully maintain interest in each song throughout a succession of reprises that often last for over 10 minutes!

Day is one in a long line of ingénues on the road to the Great White Way; her mother (Gladys George), someone she hasn't seen in ages, is an ex-Broadway queen who, unbeknownst to Day, is a washed-up alcoholic working as a domestic for beer kingpin S.Z. Sakall.
A plot like that is basically marking time between song numbers, and here we have a dog's breakfast of refried Gershwin and Cole Porter sandwiched in-between lesser and lesser-known tunes.
The only extra is a Day trailer gallery encompassing Lullaby of Broadway, Romance on the High Seas, It's a Great Feeling, April in Paris, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, and Lucky Me.

Florenz Ziegfeld's "Follies" were the mainstay of showmanship on Broadway in the early days, but writers, composers and performers - including Irving Berlin, Al Jolson, Fanny Brice and the Gershwins - stamped an American signature on the merging of song, music, dance and drama that had developed from operetta and then vaudeville.
The footage of Broadway's early years, including Billie Burke Ziegfeld performing in her husband's "Follies" and performances of "Porgy and Bess," is fascinating.

Lullaby of Broadway: the Tony awards are about marketing, not theater
Meant to celebrate (however questionably) the best in Broadway theater, they are resorting to ever more desperate stratagems to, as they believe, tailor their TV show to higher ratings, i.e., peddle it to what used to be called the great unwashed when looking washed was still deemed desirable.
To beef up their importance, there seem now to be far more Tony categories--so many, that some, considered minor, were reduced to being shown on local public television (PBS) while the others got full network treatment on CBS (what a difference one letter makes!).

Doris Day : Lullaby of Broadway - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Despite its familiar title, Warner Bros.' Lullaby of Broadway was an original movie musical, albeit one in which nearly all the songs were vintage titles owned by the film company.
Warner did not have a record company, so there could be no soundtrack album, but Day had a contract with Columbia Records, and she had enjoyed considerable success the previous year by recording tie-in albums from her films Young Man With a Horn and Tea for Two.
It was just Day, accompanied by the Norman Luboff Choir and the Buddy Cole Quartet on the title song, "Fine and Dandy" (which was not in the film), and the newly written "I Love the Way You Say Goodnight," and by an orchestra conducted by Frank Comstock on the rest.

Warners had taken the hit song from one of their big 1930's extravaganzas, dressed it all in pretty technicolor, given it a typical back-stage storyline and filled it with a lot of talented and gifted performers.
The songs come fast and furious thereby capably keeping the audience from realizing they'd seen the story done before and that the chemistry between Miss Day and co-star Gene Nelson is more like that between a brother and a sister than two sweethearts.
While I don't think it quite measures up to some of Day's other Warners pictures, "Lullaby of Broadway" is nevertheless a tuneful formula picture, blessed with some fine talent and if you're not tapping your feet during Day's snappy rendition of the title tune, then you need to check for a pulse.

Tea for Two was a loose adaptation of the Broadway musical No, No, Nanette, while Lullaby of Broadway was an original script packed with old songs to which Warner owned copyright.
The song scores were miscellaneous collections of standards to begin with, and Day wasn't even very strict about adhering to them with Columbia.
So, this album is basically a set of Day performances of old show tunes, accompanied either by an orchestra or by a small group (the Page Cavanaugh Trio or the Buddy Cole Quartet), with Gene Nelson (who appeared in both films) turning up occasionally during the first half, often as a tap dancer.
