Lum and Abner was an (A native or inhabitant of the United States) American (A communication system based on broadcasting electromagnetic waves) radio (Light and humorous drama with a happy ending) comedy which was on the air as a first-run ((electronics) a system of interconnected electronic components or circuits) network program from 1932 to 1954.
Prior to the audition the two men decided to change their act and portray two (additional info and facts about hillbillies) hillbillies since there were already an overabundance of flface acts at the time.
During the (The decade from 1940 to 1949) 1940s "Lum and Abner" starred in several (A form of entertainment that enacts a story by a sequence of images giving the illusion of continuous movement) motion pictures built around their radio characters.

Chester (Chet) Lauck, of Lum and Abner fame.
Though he was obviously Chester Lauck and not Lum Edwards, there was a definite resemblance in voice inflections, and occasionally he purposely lapsed into the voice of Lum to emphasize a point—for example, when explaining how the last name Edwards becomes Edderds in Arkansas dialect.
While I was there, Lauck played a rerun of a Lum and Abner show on which his good friend Jack Benny was guest and also let me hear a tape he was planning to market—Chic Sales’ "The Specialist," about a champion privy builder—a piece he had recorded in the voice of Lum.

It was a daily comedy serial featuring Lum Edwards and Abner Peabody, (played by Chet Lauck and Norris Goff) partners who owned a general store in the little town of Pine Ridge, Arkansas.
The uncles had never heard of Lum and Abner before, but after that night they became regular listeners to the series being rebroadcast long after the originals had gone off the air.
I'm always jotting down notes as I listen to Lum & Abner, so I started a group for those who would be interested in discussing any and all trivial aspects of the show.

In order to make a Lum and Abner Movie, they had to get Lum and Abner away from Pine Ridge, thus away from all their numerous quirky alter egos which were the essence of the act.

 Montgomery County Arkansas Postcards
Postcards of Waters now Pine Ridge and local characters from the "Lum and Abner" era and booklets are for sale at the Jot em Down Store and museum which features displays on local history and "Lum and Abner" memorabilia.
Postcards and a "Lum and Abner" display are also found in Mena, 18 miles to the west, at the Information Center (The railway depot).
Among the characters made famous by the Lum and Abner radio show was Sister Simpson, seen here feeding her chickens and hogs.

Chester "Chet" Lauck (Lum Eddards) and Norris 'Tuffy" Goff (Abner Peabody) were the creators, actors, writers, sound effects men, directors, and the life of the "Lum 'N' Abner" Program.
The names, "Lum Eddards" and "Abner Peabody", were a spur of the moment addition and the format was more conversational than situational, but the performers showed so much talent that they were invited back.
By the mid-1930's the radio program was well-known nation-wide and the listeners were asking where Pine Ridge was, so the name of the town was changed in an elaborate ceremony on the steps of the State Capitol in Little Rock in 1936, on the fifth anniversary of the program.

The elderly, moustached and bearded Lum and Abner, voiced by Chester and Norris respectively, ran the Jot 'Em Down Store--one of the only places in town to procure groceries, gas and other odds and ends.
Premiums like the Lum Edwards for President cello, The Pine Ridge News paper and envelope, Lum and Abner's Family Almanac, a glass shake-up decanter with aluminum lid and several postcards and photos were develped in the '30s and '40s.
Chester and Norris starred in seven Lum and Abner films, and lived quite well off their fledgling enterprise until their deaths in 1980 and 1978, respectively.
