A comprehensive report, which was produced by the Lumber River Council of Governments (LRCOG) in cooperation with the Southern Coastal Plain Ground Water Advisory Council, concludes that the supply of ground water is "adequate" to supply the needs of regional users at present.
LRCOG Chief Administrator Jim Perry briefed the Bladen County Commissioners on the Southern Coastal Plain Comprehensive Ground Water Study and Assessment in a workshop last Monday.
Perry said the study indicates that there is an estimated 75 million gallons per day available from the Cape Fear River and recommended that the county apply to the state for an allocation from the river.

LUMBERTON - The Lumberton City Council wrestled with a rezoning request Monday that some city residents say is needed to keep children in their neighborhood safe.
The council approved two other rezoning issues Monday: a request by CBL Associates to change property on Corporate Drive from Office/Residential to Business General Commercial, and a request by Dr. Dalton Brooks to change property at the corner of Dayalpur Avenue and Fayetteville Road from Residential Single Family to Office/Residential.
Davis told the council that it was his understanding that the neighbor who had been concerned about the Corporate Drive request would be satisfied with the rezoning if the owners built a wood fence.

EEP wetland, stream and buffer restoration projects awarded to private-sector firms this year involved 143,000 feet of streams, 625 acres of wetlands and 75 acres of riparian buffers.
The grants will be used to install diesel oxidation catalysts on school buses, to reduce their emissions of soot and other pollutants that can form fine particles in the atmosphere.

Washington, D.C. Representative Mike McIntyre announced today that he has secured $250,000 in federal funds for the Lumber River Council of Governments to work with local law enforcement agencies to begin implementing improvements in communication systems.
With these federal funds, Lumber River COG will work with local law and rescue agencies in Bladen, Columbus, Hoke, Richmond, Robeson, and Scotland counties to begin mapping out a strategy for more effective communications.
An up-graded area emergency communication system will allow direct communications among public safety providers and relay that information to all citizens who may be affected.
